how far in advance do i look for a groom's cake?

I wanted to order a custom groom's cake for FH. He's really into poker so I'm thinking of getting a poker table cake for our rehearsal dinner. How far in advance should I order it? Any suggestions?

i ordered mine awhile ago at the cake gallery in bellmore- they were really nice and accommodating and thought of some reallly cool ideas!

If you know the bakery that you want to order it from, you could always ask them. However I don't think ordering it early is a problem. I'm having my groom's cake displayed on our wedding, and I contacted someone almost a year out. However my cake is going to be insane, and I wanted the details worked out earlier because I'm nuts.

I was supposed to get my groom's cake made by a family friend, but she dropped out the week before the wedding. I ordered my hubby's Batman cake on Monday for our Friday rehearsal and it was perfect. Check out Rolling Pin Bakery - they were great!

I'm ordering mine from rolling pin and they advised ordering it in the spring for my august wedding.
