How good should wedding cakes taste?

So I've started my wedding cake tasting process and I think maybe I set my expectations too high. How good should a wedding cake taste? Should I be really impressed like with a dessert at a fancy restaurant? Or should it just be more like 'it tastes pretty good but I wouldn't necessarily come back just for the dessert'? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I have never had wedding cake that was great. Most places are average at best & I have been to 1 wedding in LI where the cake was disgusting!

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I just noticed you're getting married at Glen Island. I was at a wedding there this past August and their cake was average, but they also had the viennese hour which was incredible!

Thanks for letting me know! Actually, that's part of the problem I'm having. Glen Island will make the cake for $3.50/slice ($550 total) but they don't do cake tasting, so I've got no idea what I'm getting. Their food is very good, so I can only assume that the cake wouldn't be awful. My issue is whether I should use an outside baker who'll charge me a lot more plus a delivery fee when I'm not blown away by the way the cake tastes.

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

how many places have you tried - you might want to try a few more because if you are paying to have a cake it should be great -

there are some great bakers in the city you should try some of them out

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I felt the same way at the beginning. Every place I went to, I thought the cake was average, when I was expecting it to be so unbelievable because I was paying an arm and a leg for it! Keep looking around. Don't settle! Everyone's tastes are different so keep trying more. If you go with an outside baker you want people to say what a beautiful cake and it is the best wedding cake I have ever had. Normally people don't say that about the cake.

Good Luck!

I got my cake through create a cake - It tasted really good. But I think for the most part wedding cake doesn't always taste as good as they look.

A cake can taste excellent. Our bakery is unbelievable. Do not settle. The cake is one of the things I always remember. I have had a lot of bad cakes

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I would just let them make the cake and save the extra money and put it towards something else!! U don't even eat a whole slice and by that time people have been drinking so much that they don't even bother with the cake either!!!

JMO!!!

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I had a wedding cake from a place in Jersey once that wa outrageous..it was carrot with cream cheese frosting. I wish I could remember the name, but it was a wedding I attended in the city.

All other cakes, including my own was just average. They all look better than they taste.

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

In general, I would say they look a lot nicer than they taste. That was my rule until this summer when a friend had the most AMAZING cake (and not just wedding cakes) I've ever eaten. Seriously, everyone who ate it looked for seconds (I had thirds and almost fourths!) I'm a BIG dessert person, though, so the taste of the cake is impt to me.

The only iffy thing was that it wasn't the traditional white wedding cake. FM me if you want the bakery's name and more details. Good Luck!

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I don't even know what my cake will taste like... we never tried it... we are getting it through the hall so I am sure it will just be average... I don't think people expect a wedding cake to be GREAT...

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

Mine through Audrey's is delicious....Really moist cake with great fillings....It would be a bakery cake I would buy for the taste. Is it the best dessert I ever had? No, because cake is cake, but as cake goes it is d*mn good!

Re: How good should wedding cakes taste?

I would say if you are paying for it is should be excellent and NOT just good. I know we looked around alot to pick our place. I will tell you that my parents went to my second cousin's wedding on sat (DH and I couldn't fly in for it) but they said that all the family told them that it was the best cake that they have ever had at a wedding and many of our guests are using this place to get their holiday stuff.

Keep looking you will find the right place eventually.

I wanted a cupcake cake from Magnolia, which is right near my old apartment, becaue I LOOOOVEEE cupcakes and everyone knows it. FH said 'No, I want a REAL cake'--whatever dude! If we can't find a wedding cake we like, I think that might be the way to go.

Though I did really have my heart set on getting a Tiffany box cake...So, we'll see.
