Re: How in the world do you do seating?
alot of girls have actually done diagrams or floor plan type deals.
Make a big poster board of your halls reception layout and then use post it notes to move people around??

Make a giant floor sized picture of your seating chart. Put everones name on a card... AND throw them all in the air. Wherever they land is where they sit... Whether they 'f'ing like it or not... Sorry a little cranky today.J/K
I honestly have no idea.. I was thinking of using that seating chart thing on this website since i have the whole guest list typed in and you just have to click on them to move them around in the tables.

OMG I hate doing the seating!!!! I got a copy of the ballroom table setup from Atlantica, & then I drew up my own tables on a big piece of paper & am pencilling in people (so I can easily erase). This is NOT fun.

omg--we just finished ours!! WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! Definitely the worst part of the planning-hands down!!
we got a floor plan from our hall and worked with it and just put people with who knew who-don't drive yourself nuts--we were too nice and tried to please everyone--then i remembered where we have sat @ other people's weddings and I said 'To hell with it!' lol good luck

we got a floor plan of our hall. then i took a large piece of foam board, or poster board, and small post its. i put all couples on postits and i was able to just move people around and get a sense of how to seat everyone. it's a pain in the a$$

Maybe I am in the minority here but I didn't think it was that bad.
I wrote down all the table numbers with space under them then just started and grouped people together that went together and then made the adjustments for misc. people and the tables that were over.

Re: How in the world do you do seating?
I'm with Monkey Bride - it really wasn't all that bad. First of all, group people who know each other. I had a table of HS Friends, a table of this group from college, a table of that group from college, a table of all my radio coworkers, FIL's Family, two sides of my family, that sort of thing. (My personal favorite group name was 'Jews and Harry Potter'.)
Then quantify them. Figure out how many people can fit at each table. Also group according to age. Put 20 somethings with 20 somethings, and so on. It's useful to use the reply cards for this if you don't have a computer program (I used planning software).
Honestly, anyone who complains about where they are sitting at the wedding is pathetic anyway. Don't stress.

Re: How in the world do you do seating?
we printed every couple's names on paper, and cut it into strips so that each couple was a strip. Then we put everyone in their obvious groups. We filled in the gaps in tables with the stragglers, or moved smaller groups around so that everyone knew at least one couple at a table. We started off by just writing it, but we ended up erasing so much that we found the strips to be much easier.

I haven't done mine yet but I've been keeping all my response cards together by groups. I plan to use the cards to make different piles of 10-12 per table. I'll admit- it worries me a little b/c some people will have to be split from the people they know and sit with strangers, but that's just how its got to be I guess. Good Luck!

Re: How in the world do you do seating?
I have the easiest way to do this: As the cards come in, the first 10 people to respond are at table 1, the second 10 people are at table 2, etc.
Actually, we just used the responce cards. Made huge tables of everyone that might go together and broke it down from there.

I'm with you!
I just put all the people together who 'belong' together. The only stipulation was that everyone had to know at least one other person at the table (spouse or SO not included).
Also it was easier for me because I didn't worry that tables be even. I have 3 tables of 6, 6 tables of 9 and 1 table with 10. My hall will use the different sized tables as required.
Maybe you can do something like that?

Re: How in the world do you do seating?
I started by doing an excel spreadsheet. It was really easy!!
We can have 10-14 to a table.
So first I set up a bunch of columns numbered 1 -14.
Then I started entering the names where I thought they would go. DOn't put too much thought into the intial plan. For example, I put my mom's table together, cousins, friends, etc. You may have too many or too little at one table - but once you do this for everyone you can visual how to move people around.
I did my family and friends - I forwarded it to FH for him to do his...and we were done in no time!!!
If you want FM me your email address and I can forward it to you.

Re: How in the world do you do seating?
I did an excel spreadsheet as I made a list of people we are planning to invite. Then I color coded each table. I know I'll have juggling to do later when response cards come in. As long as I put family with family and friends with friends, I'm not stressing.
