FH and I really want to hear certain songs at our wedding. So yesterday I emailed our DJ a pretty long list of songs and indications of when we'd like to hear them (cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, etc.) Then today I was thinking that maybe we're not supposed to do that and that we should just let the DJ play the songs he thinks are best for the occasion. I hope that I didn't insult the DJ by basically planning out the music for the whole night. But FH and I just figured that since it's our big night we should be able to hear all the songs that we love and that are meaningful to us instead of just typical wedding music. Did any other brides out there do something similar to this? Or does everyone usually just let the DJ pick all the music?

Re: How involved should we be in our music selection?
We are doing the same thing. We want to give the DJ a list of songs that we want played - he can pick the order (except for the F/D dance, etc) - but only the songs on the list can be played.
I'm being very upfront with the DJ companies we contact about this - as we will not stand for the typical, Chicken Dance type stuff...as it makes us twitch..
I'm hearing back from the vendors on here that they will play whatever you want them to - because it's your day and your money..
Best of luck!!!

I think that everyone generally gives the dj or band a must play list and a no play list. You're definitely not wrong to do this. It's your wedding and you guys should hear what you want to hear and what might be meaningful to you and you shouldn't have to hear things that you really dislike. I'm sure the DJ is used to it, so don't worry about it.

Yes, the DJ should take into account your 'Love 'em!' songs and your 'Hate 'em!' songs. For a five-hour reception, including dinner, we got to specify 30 reception songs max and six songs during dinner. We could ban as many as we wanted. It's also important to give the DJ a bit of leeway too, so s/he can read the crowd and respond accordingly. Don't worry about saying what your tastes are unless your DJ volunteers your list is too constrictive.

There is nothing wrong with telling your DJ what you want to hear. However, having been to a few, wedding, sweet 16s, and bat mitzvahs, I can tell you, they never play everything you request. So if there are one or two songs that are much more important than the rest. Make sure you let them know ahead of time.
