It seems like everyone is able to get a home...are your jobs that good? have you been saving? Just wondering bc I know FH and I cant afford to live here, at least not for a while anyway.

Well, FH had a little more saved than I did. I had a some saved and then I took a loan out of my 401K, which you can do with no penalty for your first home. It was hard though. I'm not gonna lie. It's possible though and no, neither of us are rich.
ETS: Oh, also, I made a conscious decision to put all of our money towards a house, rather than a wedding. Not trying to knock anyone at all, but I just knew it was one or the other for us if we wanted to stay on Long Island. So, we're having a small wedding of 75 people. Something very simple, yet classy.

we save, we invest and we are going to hunt for a 'fixer-upper' in a good area with a solid school district (either one that is already doing well or an area that is 'up and coming') we keep our eyes out in real estate mags and newspapers to watch the areas on long island we might be interested in. we are looking to possibly start off w/ a condo b/c they can be more affordable. hopefully, whatever we get we will then sell in a few years and make a profit from the work we do on it. FH works a lot of hours, i have two jobs and we just work and save our little butts off. we are going to take the wedding money and add that to our savings. we have not been 'out' in months b/c our money goes in the bank. at that point and then when FH is done with med school and gets a solid job we will buy a house. until then, we are living with parents for free so we can save every possible penny. would i rather be in an apartment alone with FH? of course but throwing rent down the drain won't help us get a house anytime soon. so that's our game plan. so far, so good. it just takes a lot of work and perserverance... but for me, living on long island is well worth it.

I've been wondering the same thing. FH and I rent a crappy little tiny apartment in someone's house. We barely have any space. We both have not so great credit...and FH works 2 jobs, I'm looking for a 2nd just to pay for the wedding. We'll worry about a house after that! My parents are going to contribute some for the wedding, but his family can't afford to pay for anything. Its stress! I wish I could be buying a house...

the only reason we are able to afford a house right now is bc we are buying FH's grandmothers house. His grandmother recently passed away and the family gave us a good deal if we wanted to buy the house....

We live in an apartment in Brooklyn. We're paying for the wedding ourselves so it will take us some time to buy a house. When we do we'll probably buy in Jersey. My dad lives out there and his house is beautiful. I would not consider buying on LI, the houses in the nicer areas are so expensive and really not that great. When I lived in Huntington for school, I'd see houses for sale and look at the websites and wow 425K for a 2 bedroom cottage in a crappy area. No thanks. There are some really nice areas of LI with fabulous houses but if I want to pay 700K I'll get a mansion in Jersey as opposed to a nice starter in LI.

Just saw houses in Carolinas...240,000 for 4-5bedrooms, 2.5baths ,living room dining room breakfast nook family room and they were just gorgeous...that price her youd be living in a shed in someones yard!

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree! we are renting from his parents right now and we are going to save for a house and move out hopfully a year after... we will be buying a house in NJ where we will get a lot more for our money than we would in ny...

It stinks, I would be dying if I knew I had to save for a wedding & purchase a home at the same time , or near future. God Bless all you girls who are doing it.. Its very hard 2 do both.. Id be bitting my cuticles off...
My situation is a lil different , I owned a condo & sold that when the market went nuts , that enabled me to buy my home.. Still though , mtge is alot, along with , landscaper, water , electric, etc,,,

we're definitely not buying a home for a few years atleast. even renting isn't gonna be easy seeing how high the rents are these days. FH and me just accepted that we can't afford a house on LI or elsewhere right now so we're gonna save as much as we can after the wedding is over and hopefully we'll be in our first home before we turn 30.

We live in Staten Island but it's the same thing here. Everything is so expensive. Right now we are saving every last dime for the wedding. I know my parents are giving us a decent gift that could be put towards our home and I am sure his family will too. So we are going to wait for the market to come down a little before we start looking. If we have to we can rent an apartment until we can afford a house.
