I personally don't know much about it, but I've heard that it's not the greatest, or safest area. Of course each town has it's 'good' and 'bad' areas.

MY FI and I drove out there to look around after seeing some houses listed that were fairly reasonably priced AND reading an article (either NYTimes or Daily News, I think) about how the area is becoming desirable for people living in the city who want a second home but don't want to drive out to the Hamptons.
There are some beautiful houses and yards...right next to some run-down, yucky houses and yards. I think itt's a cute area and it may be on the way 'up' but it's not there yet.

My DH lived in Mastic for a year before he moved to E Quogue... we were in the area about a month ago. Close to the ocean the homes get nicer but nothing like the Hamptons but close to Montauk Highway its one giant slum. JMO.
