How long did you wait before you took your newborn out?
Her doctor says 8 weeks. She's 4 weeks old, and I'm developing a wicked case of cabin fever. I can't imagine 4 more weeks of being in all the time during the week. Running errands on the weekends just isn't cutting it for me.
How long did you wait?
TIA!

Maybe it's a NY things because here in CO people don't really wait to take their babies out. My friend brought her baby to dinner at a restaraunt at about 3 weeks and he's just fine.
No way could I be tied to the house for 8 weeks but I guess if a doctor told me I might be more prone to listen.

No way was I staying in for 6-8 weeks! It was May when he was born and gorgeous out! AS soon as I felt up to going out with him (I had a c/s and was recovering), I took him out. I think he was 11 days old

Oh please, I had my daughter Nov 30th, we were in the mall shoppng for the next 3 weeks. I just kept her bundled and away from anyone who may touch her. What do you think happens when you have a few school aged kids living in the house and you bring home a newborn, the germs are even WORSE. Many of my my girlfriends have 4 and more kids and once you get past the first one things change, they's laugh hysterically if someone told them they had to stay away from crowds, etc for 8 weeks, impossible!!!

You can take him out (keep him very warm) - just avoid crowds - I thought that was more the rule - no?? You just don't watn to get him sick. I have taken him in the car to the dr, to visit family, and to run to the store (DH stayed in the car with him). I would take him out for walks if the weather was nicer. My friend said he doctor said once it hits 40 degrees to definitely go for walks. I attempted one day but he screamed the whole walk so we made it one block.
It is very hard waiting and worse yet since I don't drive so there is no where for me to go unless me, DH and baby go together. The hospital said 6 weeks to us and my dr said more like 2 months - but that was hard. At the end of his 5th week, we took a quick trip to he supermarket and to start looking for a restaurant for his christening. We didn't let anyone touch him. At the end of the 6th week, we went to a couple stores with him. I am scared of malls because there are so many people and everyone is sick. I also avoid big parties.

Since it will be almost May we will be out walking within 2 weeks. I think the rule for me will be nobody touches the baby. I would go nuts staying in for 8 weeks.

I'm more cautious because my dad's twin and my little sister both got extremely sick when they were teeny babies from coming in contact with people who were sick.
My sister got meningitis and my dad's twin got pneumonia.
I didn't tell you this to scare anyone but I think I'll be a bit more a homebody in the beginning.

Honestly ladies, don't drive yourselves nuts with this, I will have 2 school aged kids when the baby is born at the end of the summer and I'm sure they will bring home lots of yucky germs, just wash your hands alot, make people who come into contact with your baby wash their hands, and have most people keep their distances. Babies are a lot more resilient than we think. My daughter brought home a really bad cold when my 2nd daughter was only 2 weeks old and the doctor said 'we're strengthening her immune system already, just no high fever!'. Always use caution, but don't drive yourselves nuts. The mail could bring in the flu to your home, or touching an infected shopping cart, just try to enjoy your little bundle!

From what I have heard you should not take the baby to public places like a mall or supermarket. It should be ok to take the baby to your families house.... but germs are germs...they are the same at the store or at your mom's house....I don't know if I will wait 8 weeks....I am due October 22 and I will have to Christmas shop shortly after that.

With both my kids I waited until they were at least a month old. Especially with my daughter because she was born during cold and flu season. My hubby did the grocery shopping, it was kinda nice I just didn't want to take any chances of them getting sick, everyone wants to touch new babies, drives me CRAZY!
