How long did you wait before you took your newborn out?

Original post by CathyB

Her doctor says 8 weeks. She's 4 weeks old, and I'm developing a wicked case of cabin fever. I can't imagine 4 more weeks of being in all the time during the week. Running errands on the weekends just isn't cutting it for me.

How long did you wait?

TIA!

We took my son to a store at 5 days old

So it's warm enough now to go for walks? I was going to wait until it got up to 60 degrees, it's been kinda cold lately.

We took Nick out for walks after 2 weeks (it was warm out), then to the store, etc. about a week after that. We just didn't let anyone touch him - he was fine. I would be a little more cautious if it had been the cold weather...

All of you are very lucky. We fall into a different category. It has been almost 6 months and we are still not allowed out.
(11 weeks premature) We go to family member's houses and to the doctor. I am hoping in a few weeks we will begin to get our more as the weather gets nicer. Just think of us having cabin fever when you think 8 weeks is a long time.

I had my daughter in August. The dr. told me to wait two weeks. She was at the stores, malls, etc. by four weeks. I kept her hidden from the outside world in her travel system. I couldn't imagine being inside for eight weeks.

Taking the baby out for a walk is different then taking the baby to the mall. Outside is not as risky, there's no concern about germs. As long as it's warm enough out I don't see why you couldn't take a newborn for a walk outside.

Our doctors wanted us to wait until she was 8 weeks. She was born during the high time of flu season (the end of Oct.) and the malls were always crowded with Christmas shopping. They basicially told us we can take her out if we wanted to but if she got a fever she would have to be hospitalized. To me that's not worth the risk. I'd rather stay in with her for 8 weeks. I just ran errands while DH waited in the car or stayed home with her. It wasn't easy but I didn't want to risk it.

Only thing I can tell you is to not be afraid to ask someone not to touch the baby when they try to touch her.
Its amazing how many ppl want to touch a babys hands and face. Its horrible

That's one thing I'm worried about. How can you ask this politely? Or how to you ask people to wash their hands before handling the baby. Either way it may come out mean sounding...
