How long do you need to serve in the US Navy to qualify for a pension? Curious as to why an elderly neighbor doesn't get a pension from the Navy..TIA

He would have to have put in atleast 20 years to be considered 'retired'
He must also have an honorable discharge if I am not mistaken.
I work at the Veterans Hospital in Northport and you only get a pension if you were honorably discharged AND were injured while in the service, it is called 'service connected', you are given compensation based on the extent of your injury, most of the mentally ill patients I work with are 100% Service connected (SC), meaning they withstood injuries while in the servce that will forever leave them disabled. There are also 'Non-service conneced' compensation which is based on financial need. Retirement is 20 years to get a retirement pension. He should be receiving Social Security though that kicks in automatically as long as you have a work history.
