How long should it take to set a diamond?
Those of you who bought your diamond separate from your setting (or changed settings), how long did it take for the jeweler to set it? I'm trying to figure out what is a normal time to expect... 1 day? 2-3? a week? 2 weeks? longer? Thanks in advance.

Re: How long should it take to set a diamond?
My FH got my e-ring from a jeweler in the diamond district. They have everything done right away - none of that 'it will take a couple of days' stuff. I'm sure they should be able to do it right then and there - I personally would not feel comfortable leaving my diamond to be reset.

Re: How long should it take to set a diamond?
I would definitely call them. It should NOT be taking this long. There are a ton of people who could have set the stone already (if they didn't have the machine there). I work in the D.D. so I know.

Hmm that's what I expected. We decided to order my ring from a jeweler in the diamond district since we're currently out of state for school (it's actually one of the recommended vendors for this site) and tomorrow will be the 2 week mark and still no word on when it will be ready!
It's a stone they have in-house, a non-custom setting they carry, and I can't believe it could take them 2 weeks (or even 1 week) to set a diamond solitaire ring, let alone longer than that! (The website says same day shipping for a loose stone, 2-3 days shipping for the setting, and they say 2.5 weeks start to finish for a custom ring, so I don't know what the deal is but I'm starting to get antsy!)
I also discovered that they give a 5% discount to LIW members, but since we emailed them about it after it was already ordered (but before they shipped it or even set it apparently!) they refused to honor it. :(
Am I right that it's a little crazy to take 2 weeks (possibly more) to set one stone?
I think the wait is just killing me...

Usually they do work like that while you wait. Most places don't take the diamon out of your sight.

15 minutes. And if they ask you to leave it with them, I'd grab my diamond and ring and walk right out. You should NEVER have to leave your ring with them just to set or reset a stone.

Re: How long should it take to set a diamond?
yeah, I'd ask to see the ring under the stereoscope, read of the number etched on the side, and compare it to the GIA certificate... just to make sure there wasn't a switch!

Re: How long should it take to set a diamond?
one of my friends got her ring fro the diamond district. She got her stone at one place and the setting at another. They set it right there while he waited. When her brother was ready to pop the question, he went into the diamond district as well. He bought a stone, and he had to ORDER a setting. He had the whole thing in his pocket less than 2 weeks later.
I would call them to find out when they are expecting it to be done, and even follow up with a PC the day they tell you it's supposed to be ready. Sometimes businesses need to have a fire lit under their @$$.
Good Luck and I hope you get your ring soon!!!!
