I am having 7 bridesmaids including my maid of honor.

I think, the smaller the better. I have four girls (including FH's sister and my sister) and one guy in my party. FH has 2 guys. It comes out to 4 girls and 3 guys.

I am having 3 total.

MOH- My best friend
BM#1- My cousin
BM#2- FH's sister

Just remember the more BM's girls you have, the more of a headache it can be. You have to pick get dresses that work for all of them. Don't forget you have to get gifts too.
