How many calories

are you supposed to have a day?

Any rule to follow when counting calories?

The average is 1600-2000 calories a day.

Re: How many calories

I believe the old standby is to take your present weight and multiply it x10 .. this number would be the max calories you should eat per day. So you'll need to eat less that this number of calories in order to lose.

I'd say depending on how active you are, how often you exercise, etc, you should eat anywhere from 1,200 -2,000 per day (depending on if you are a man or woman .. men can eat more!!) I've been watching my calories and keep it at about 1,000-1,200 since I sit on my butt all day at work and only started going back to the gym last week.

And of course staying low-fat, low-carb helps a lot as well

but what if most of your calories come from fruits and veggies?

and what about grams of fat? what's a number that's within reason to stay?

I know .. on most days, so do I! But I'm just not active enough to lose weight and still eat as much as I want to !

I think the guidelines I posted were 'old school' .. today most people watch their fat intake and carbs more than calorie counting. I just know that for me lo-carb did NOT work. WW seems to work best, even if you dont follow it stricly it gets you used to portion sizes and a balanced diet. In my case if I don't portion control my meals and plan them out, I can never seem to lose weight.

Re: How many calories

I just read about this. It has to do with you weight and how active you are.

I think it was 13x your weight for inactive
14x your weight for fairly active
15x your weight for very active

Not POSITIVE about these numbers but I'm fairly sure

So then to LOSE weight, you'd have to manipulate those numbers a bit.

Yes, I would assume so. You have to cut the calories in order to lose

Re: How many calories

I have been counting calories for the last two weeks. And I have not gotten back to the gym yet , but am keeping my calories around 1200 per day with the fat grams below 20 per day and I have lost about 7 pounds. I think it's the best and easiest way for me to lose weight. WW is second best, but I can never make it to weigh in or meetings.
