HOW MANY EXTRA CALORIES DO YOU THINK A PREGNANT WOMAN NEEDS???

The reason I am asking this, is b/c a GF of mine went to her prenatal visit and she gained 11 pounds in 1 month, she told the dr she was very hungry, the dr told her she has gained too much weight too quickly and that she has to be careful.

The dr told her the baby only require ________ calories to survive. (equivalent of 1 cookie) I will give the answer when you all respond.

It always amazes me how pregnant women always say they feel to eat more?? why is that?? When I heard the # of calories that was needed it shocked me.

I think maybe a lot of women may use the pregnancy as a reason to eat more...IMO not to say you might not be hungry but you can't tell me you are a whole meal more hungry.

For those of you that are or was always hungry while pregnant please tell me how much more did you find yourself eating??

The dr also told her that a lot of women tend to eat so much more while they are pregnant and when they have the baby b/c they have gotten used to eating these larger portions it is harder for them to go back to eating normal portion sizes

I find that I get full faster now, so I am eating smaller meals more frequently, maybe that makes the big difference.

I was overweight to start with... Does that matter? I agree with Kate. Now when I am hungry I find I can only eat a little before I am full. I gained 5 lbs in 1 month in my doc visits and doc told me that was a little too much to gain. Next month he said I only gained 1 pound, which wasn't too good either, although overall I was back on track. HOonestly, I was never one to watch my weight, so I have no idea how much I was before I got PG. I am going by my docs charts now.
