How many houses did you bid on?

Original post by Gonnacatchapeacock

Until your bid was accepted?

So funny..even FSBO are playing the game.
Even this way, people are bidding over asking price and I'm getting outbid. haha

I've bid on & lost 3 houses. I'm thinking '6' will be the lucky number !

When do we expect to have the market open up ???

1 for us too! We went back and forth negotiating and ended up getting it for 9k less than the asking price.

We bid on 2

House 1- bid was accepted and then literally 20 minutes later there was another offer for 5k more and they were 100% mortage we weren't. We matched that, they went up another 5k and we weren't doing that. The house was great but it was a SMALL 3 bedroom house small everything but soooooooooo cute, Definitely a starter

House 2- came on the market 2 weeks later. I knew as soon as I saw it on line that I wanted it!!!!!!!!! We bid they countered there was 5 other offers on in the first week so we just went back to asking price and it was ours!!!!!!!!!!

We bid on 7 houses, and actually went as far as receiving initial contracts with 2 before the deals fell through (weird contingencies were added to the rider on both of those, so we walked away). The house we are trying for now is so much better though. People always said it would work out this way, but it was soooooooo hard to believe. We found this house the day before Palm Sunday, and we are just awaiting a signature from the current homeowners

ETA: Also, we lost houses that we were actually the highest bidders on as well. The LI market is so friggin weird that people were actually like, no we want to sell to someone who already has a family, or I like this guy, he's a fireman

I think you also have to ask yourself 'where your offers realistic?' While I know bidding wars are happening if you are really interested in a house and want that house badly enough you might want to consider making an offer that would be acceptable right off the bat. When we bought our house we mad a full price offer and it was a done deal. Now not all sellers are the same but most are happy getting the asking price and a buyer who is very qualified.

ETA: Obviously this works if the seller isn't totally insane with what they are asking for. While our house was no bargain, it wasn't overpriced in my opinion. You also have to ask yourself 'how badly do I want this house?'

What are you offering to get out bid?

Sorry, the last three houses I've bid at least $5,000 OVER asking price. Others are bidding $15,00 OVER asking price.
It's insane out there!!

It also depends on what price bracket you are looking in. Luckily for us, we are looking for a small house that we will build up the way we want it, instead of buying a bigger house & start tearing down walls and shuffling rooms, so most of our competition was builders, and a few single parents. For the 'flooded brackets' (like around $400,000 - $500,000) there is so much competition that I have heard of houses selling for as much as $45,000 over asking price.

I'm reading your post and nodding my head.
Isn't this insanity. And as said above, we are in that 'flooded price bracket.'

Some people are extremely picky with who they want to buy their house! I would say to the average homeowner - my FH and I come across as two hard-working professional 'good people' lol
I've even thrown in some lines as 'this is where I want to start our family'.
FH and I were joking around the other day. I was going to go to our next house (serious contender) and put a fake belly on and rub my tummy and say 'this is where I want junior growing up'.

Ahhh.... I'm with you about the ' and the

We also used the 'starting a family line...even though we are not sure if or when that will be, but we tried everything short of selling our souls to the devil. In the end, it does work out for the best. At one point, we lost a bid on a house that I thought for sure we would get - I cried for 2 days that we lost it, and then when I saw this house we just felt it when we walked it..... have a little faith it will happen
