I'm used to Christmas Eve gift opening and dinner since my stepmom is Hispanic.
DH family does everything on Christmas Day
Now DH wants to start our own traditions.....

We never did anything for Christmas Eve. Before DH's one sister moved way up into Jersey we used always go there for a late dinnner and open gifts. So now that she has moved further away I now have to make a big fish (I hate fish) dinner for both of us.

we've been combining some old traditions and creating some new ones as well.
For example, in my family, everyone buys something for each others stockings and they're the last thing we open Christmas day - sometimes the BEST presents are in the stockings.
In Al's family, stockings are filled with candy and little gifts that are free game once in the stocking.
At our house, we have both wrapped and unwrapped gifts in our stockings. Unwrapped items are yours as soon as you see them. Wrapped gifts must wait till Christmas / Christmas eve (still not sure when we're opening our gifts)
This is not our first christmas, but its the first christmas since we got married that we're back living in NY and have a house. For all the years prior we were travelling to NY for the holidays and staying with my parents, so we're creating new traditions as we go this year.
As far as families go, Christmas Eve is typically spent with his family and Christmas day with mine. Which is fine but I miss out on my families Christmas Eve festivites (and I LOVE all that fish!)
