How many readers is too many?

How many readers is too many?

Hi ladies. i know it is 'my day my way' (thanks LP, I say that to myself at least once per day!) but i wanted to run this by you.

I am thinking of having 4 readers. All the passages are short, and the ceremony is going to be only 35-45 minutes total, so they really make up alot of the speaking.

do you think the flow of the ceremony will be 'off' if 4 different times someone has to come up? I will place them at the front, but there is always that lag time I hate.

do you like hearing different readings? Or would you rather hear the officiant talk the whole time?

Just looking to get some opinions...

Thanks! Thanks! THanks!

Personally I like when the officiant talks more then readers.. I personally can never understand what the readers are saying and it gets fustrating. I rather hear the officiant talk since I can understand and hear him over everything else. I would only do 2 readers - jmo.

I think 2 is plenty. It gets a little hectic with any more.

I am having 3 readers, wanted to include them so this was the best way.

I think 4 is fine if the passages are short.

lol--I'm probably having 4 readers myself--my godfather and cousin and two from fiancee's side. We're also having a duel officiants, so this should be a barrel of 'cameo' appearances. As long as someone instructs the readers how to speak into the microphones properly, there shouldn't be any trouble hearing them.

I think four is fine as long as the passages are short. It's one more layer of personalization, and I think that's the most important element in a ceremony. Why not include the people you love and whatever readings you love? It's your day!

I would say two and more importantly, as said in a previous post... please make sure they are good at public speaking. So many people are not... pause, inflections. They are not acting but some people are so monotoned and then I feel bad for the bride and groom.

1. They should speak as if they are trying to project their voice to hit the far wall in front of them.

2. However long they think they should pause they should double the time, most people rush.

3. Ask them to practice saying the reading out loud to a couple of people who are doing nothing else but listening.

4. Any difficult words should be written out phonetically.

5. It's a good idea to retype the readings in large print so people don't stumble or squint. They should also mark up their readings as to where they should pause.

Just some helpful hints from a former speech and debate coach

I'm going to have to agree, I think maybe 2 or 3 is good, but you also have to take into consideration your religion and if the ceremony 'requires' a certain amount or too many. In the catholic religion, we have first, second reading and then someone can do the prayers....it depends on what you feel comfortable with. Could you give other jobs to the people you want to have do somethign special?

Personally, I think anything more than 2 is too many.

I agree - we are having 4 as well. We have a lot of people we want to include. Just keep the passages short and it will be fine.

personally, I think 4 is great if that's who you want to include on your wedding day. Because they are special to you.
You don't have to give loved ones 'coaching' on how they should speak. Everyone is unique. These 4 people are special because you chose them and they can never 'ruin' your ceremony because they don't speak professionally like some people. I do agree with the microphone thing. It's one thing for them to get nervous and screw up but it totally isn't cool when you can't hear them.
It's your wedding ceremony. It should be personalized, and I don't think there should be a limit as to how many speakers you can have. It's not a show, it's the exchanging of vows and each other. Do what you feel is right.

I am having 3 readers. Two will do regular readings, the other will read the Prayer of the Faithful, which is usually read by the priest.

This was a great way to include some very special people, whom we chose to not put in the bridal party.
