How much are Hydrangeas?

How much are Hydrangeas?

I'm asking b/c I want to have this cake for my wedding but my florist is asking for $135 for the green hydrangeas. I always thought that hydrangeas were inexpensive filler flowers... what do you think? Where can I find out how much they are?

Thanks ladies!

Hydrangeas are not inexpensive filler flowers. They cost more than roses. The cake is beautiful!

I'm having a similar cake, and we're using silk hydrangea instead. They're a third of the price of real ones, and I got them in exactly the colors that I wanted--ivory and pale green with a shot of blue. Try afloral-dot-com.

I bought a dozen and a half, way more than I think is needed for the bakery (they need to cut them up), so I think I'm gonna go to IKEA and buy a couple of galvanized pails so I can use the remainder for the ceremony. And then use them at home.

they are the same as the ones on the cake in your picture. I am using Hydrangeas and french tulips from them for our bouquets and centerpieces. they are beautiful! I am getting the green hydrangeas and white french tulips. you can email them and they will send you pictures of them

I was curious about this too! I want to use blue hydrangeas throughout my decor, and I kept hearing mixed info about..'theyre one of the cheaper flowers' and then 'they're one of the more pricey flowers.' I love that cake. Here are ones I am considering that are kind of similar.

Yep, they're not cheap flowers. In the florist shop where DH gets me flowers for different occassions, they charge him anywhere from $12 -18 a STEM. Florists doing your wedding flowers should be able to do them for less than $10 a stem, but that is expensive compared to roses cost of about $2 a stem.

The thing is, you don't need as many hydrangea to get a full look, so some people say they're cheaper flowers because in the end you need less than if you were using roses or another flower to fill the same amount of space.

That said, my florist is charging us something like $25 to put hydrangeas on the top of the cake. I'm not sure how much more it would be to do all the layers, but I'm pretty positive it would be cheaper than what you were quoted.

Why not look into the silks option like someone posted above? Then your bakery can cut them into the right size they need to put in between each layer.

ETA: THIS is what I asked the florist to do for our cake, only ours will be the opposite: white cake and blue hydrangea.

Good idea. Have you felt silk flowers? Are they good quality?

I've only felt silk rose petals and they're fine. Personally I wouldn't use silks for my CP's or bouquets (although I did consider it for a second), but I think it's A-OK for the cake or for accents like the pews or altar flowers becuase no one will touch them. The idea is that they LOOK real. If you were using them for your CP's or bo-k's then yes, the feel of them would matter more. Many silks feel pretty real nowadays, so long as you don't buy the cheapy cheapy ones. HTH.

Re: How much are Hydrangeas?

I have hydrangea cps and I think it's about $5 a stem. There are two kinds though - local and something else. That's probably not much of a help. Sorry!
