Not including stamps, etc ... just for the invitations ...
Is it worth it to spend more money on expensive, thicker paper, fancier invites?

IMO, it's only worth spending more if they are so unique that everyone will remember them. If they are just a fancier, more expensive version of say, a simple square invite, then no, IMO, it's not worth it. They wind up in the garbage regardless. At least if they are memorable, the wind up in the garbage, but your guests remember them!

Good point. FH & I are contemplating similar invitations, just one is a heavier stock and larger. hmmmmm.

Only you can answer if it's worth it.
For me, I am VERY into stationery. I always send Holiday cards, thank you cards, and cards for birthdays and special occassions.
To me, the invites were a BIG deal.
In fact, I spent twice as much on the invites, replies, etc. than I did on my GOWN, with headpiece veil and shoes...
I am making my own invitations. The total cost, including paper, envelopes, ribbon, response card and response card envelope was $69. I can add another $35 for printer ink (I may need some).

Wow, you are a better person that me. I am not crafty - actually, I have zero patience to do that! Good for you!

I am spending rougly $350.00 for the invitations themselves. I knew invitations would cost me more because they are Trademarked by Disney so to have their trademark, costs more no matter what.
ETA: To me, it was worth it because I think the invitation will help tie my theme together.

Well, it's really easy actually.
My wedding is not going to be very formal so I went with a more casual invite. I bought folded cards in ivory, card backs in coral, and matching envelopes. All I need to do is print on the card backs and glue them onto the folder cards. Then I will attach the ribbon. After I print the envelopes and response cards and response envelopes, I am done.

We used gaddisdesign.com. You have free reign with design and colors. We are having a lot of pieces printed to coordinate, including a poem card and the direction card. Plus thankyous, and I think it is about $1100.

My sister is making ours for us. She made out engagement party cards and people not even knowing went out of their way to say how nice they were.

We spent a LOT on ours - but htat was because my Mom messed up and order too few. So, we had to order 25 more at the last minute - after they had already destroyed the plate! EEEK!!

Re: How much are you spending on INVITATIONS?
We went to Lion in the Sun in Brooklyn this weekend and checked out invites ranging from $850 for 125 invites all the way up to around $1200. Of course, our favorites are the most expensive. We are not sure what we are going to do yet but it's starting to stress me out as I know we are coming down to the wire for ordering. I really want them to be in people's hands at least 8 weeks out from the wedding since it's a holiday weekend.

Re: How much are you spending on INVITATIONS?
Our invites came to around $7.00 a piece, but that was with all the inserts and calligraphy and my invite is a larger version (7x7) so for about 200 guests (A and B lists) it came out to around $700. But I LOVE them!!
The funny thing is, I had ordered a different one from this website and the owner threw it a couple more samples and I wound up choosing one of them.
I'll post a pic - but we are using orange raffia instead of the green pictured:
