A friend of mine said she spent $3,600 on invitations! I am budgeting about $800 and I'm inviting around 240 people!! Am I totally out of my mind??

No, like everything else the prices probably range from $400 and up.

It all depends on your budget and what you personally like.
Ours are more on the expensive side. But again that is what we wanted.

i think prices for these can range all over the board. it all depends how fancy you want them to be. i just ordered mine (100) for under $200. that doesn't include what i'll have to pay for calligraphy, but still there are affordable options out there. i personally wanted to spend more money on photos and entertainment so we got less formal invites. but again it just depends on what you want. shop around and i'm sure you'll be able to find everything you're looking for :)

Emily7, you can definately get invitations for under $800 (I did, including postage and digital calligraphy for a similar size guest list) but don't shop at Cranes, and don't expect to be able to get anything too elaborate. As long as you are happy with something simple but elegant, you will be able to stay in budget.

I know for a fact you can get very nice invitations for $800. Remember though if you are inviting 240 people, that's only what? 120 invitations you need (couples and families only get one)? I just got 150 invites for us for $400.00 And they're beautiful.
You probably can't go bananas with satin bows and vellum overlays in your budget, but you can definitely get something elegant and lovely. The most important thing is to make sure they convey whatever message it is you are sending.

Speak to Laura from LA Productions. She custom makes them for a very reasonable price. I have seen a couple of invites made by her and they are very pretty!

Your friend probably had them embossed. That can almost doubles the price as the other lettering. Some websites have ways to see how huch they will cost in the end. Try http://www.crane.com/ website. I pretended like I was buying them filled everything out in terms of what invite, what font, etc. then saw the price, without ordering them. That will give you an idea.

I got my invitations through Linda of Linda's Lovelies (a vendor on this board). She was so helpful and patient when I couldnt make up my mind and changed it a thousand times! I think she gives you a percentage off too.
The prices really vary from cheap to super expensive. It really depends on what your taste is. I spend only a few hundred dollars but I saw invites in some of those books that were like $1000 for just 100 INVITES, not including any of the 'extras'....

i am going tomorrow to order my invitations and we will spend about $380 on 150 invitations, not including postage and calligraphy, etc. i think that is a phenomenal price!
i am getting them through Gail from Simply Elegant in Bayside and she has been WONDERFUL so far to work with. plus, she offers something like a 25-35% discount on all her invites. (she works out of her house).
so that's what my invitations cost
(plus a little plug for my vendor! )
