How much $ do people usually give when they're not attending?

Original post by KellNMike

I'm just wondering what the average is. And do people usually always give a gift if they're not coming? I know weddings are not about getting money, but I know we all wonder how much money we'll get in the end.

Yea, we really thought that people usually give a gift when they're not going to the wedding, because we always did

Same here - I would never think of not sending a gift if I didn't attend - usually I'd give $50-75 ... depending on how close I am to the person, etc. If I am not going, chances are it's because I'm not that close with the bride/groom. If it was a family member's wedding that I couldn't attend for some reason, I might give exactly what I would have if I had attended ... I still want to give the gift, you know? Doesn't matter if I was there or not - which to me is the reason you give a gift, because you want to celebrate the marriage and give something because you WANT to, not because you have to because you think it's required ....

But regardless, I definitely wouldn't send it with my NO rsvp - I'd probably send a card as the date approaches, or right after, or drop the gift/card off at the house.

See I think it isnt necessary to send a rsvp of no and a gift, if you really dont know or arent close. (as in when you are sent an invite by default)-
But if I had a prior arrangement and couldnt make a good friend or family member I thin $50-$100 is nice.

I think the average from people who didn't attend was $50-100.

What people will give you that day will certainly surprise you! Keep in mind that people who don't live in NY don't know how much weddings cost here so don't be surprised if their gift doesn't cover the cost of their plate!

We got back exactly what we spent with a little extra to spare.
