While we are on the topic, I'm curious how much everyone gives as gifts. I recently went to a wedding for a friend (regular old friend), and we(FH and I) gave $300, but then we were told by others that that was a very large amount. So, now I'm thinking about what's standard for a regular friend. Now, for my next wedding I think I will give $200 (from my fiance and I). Then, I have a wedding of a co-worker and I'm thinking $175. What do you all think.

Re: How much do you give?
FH and I always give $300 for co workers or friends - more for family. . . people have told me thats a lot also but i feel that it is perfect. . . it covers your plate and it is a nice gesture . . . i know that it isnt supposed to be about that but if we can afford it i think it is helpful!

Re: How much do you give?
I know I will get attacked for this one, but.....
I go by roughly how much it is per plate..and this is only because I know how expensive weddings are. If you can afford it, great, if not, give what you can....

Re: How much do you give?
I would give 200+ to relatives depending on how close you are to them and no more than 200 to acquaintances.
It also depends on where the wedding is and what venue they are having... We gave 300 to FH's cousin at her wedding last week, but would probably have given closer to 200 if she had a small wedding at some restaurant or a backyard bbq.
In the South or West U.S, I've heard you can get away with less since they pay alot less than us for reception halls... :)

soon2b, I don't think there is anything wrong with that because sometimes you have to pick and choose who gets what, and it's hard (because we're not rich either).

I give based on how expensive the venue is. i make sure that i at least cover my plate.
of course you give more depending on how well you know the bride and groom.

I know the feeling, weddings are an expensive venture, and going to them is a lot also. I know what the bride and groom is going through, so I like to help out.

Re: How much do you give?
I just gave $200 for my co-worker's wedding a few weeks ago. That's typically what FI and I have agreed on. I was suggesting giving a little bit more - maybe $250 - and he looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Re: How much do you give?
I give between $250-$350 from me and FH depending on how close we are to the person. Closest friends would get $350, most friends would get $300 and acquaintances would be $250.
I used to give around $200 in gifts for New England weddings because my friends who live up there say they do it differently. But I think I'm just going to give what I would give for a NY/CT/NJ wedding going forward. I'd hate to treat them differently because of location.
It's really all about what you can afford though. I know some of my guests may not give me anything, or maybe $100 per couple and that's fine.

Re: How much do you give?
$300 is standard for us to give. But everyone is different and if we have to travel to the wedding (stay in a hotel), we might give a little bit less.

Re: How much do you give?
I'll probably get attacked for this one, too...
I gave a friend of mine $100 and a cute Dr. Seuss book for graduating med school... I sat through a 6 hour graduation, and couldn't stay for the dinner because it was SO late by that time, we had to leave.
She was supposed to be my MOH, but then asked not to be because she was too busy just having become a Dr., so she's a BM. THEN she got engaged and got married within 4 months (so much for too busy to be a MOH... she was a BRIDE!)... and a lot happened that disappointed me as to how good of friends we REALLY were. I thought we were a LOT closer than it turns out we were.
Anyway, when she came to my Engagement Party, which was at a really nice restaurant, she gave $50 for her and her boyfriend. (that was not long AFTER what I thought was a really generous med school graduation gift).
So, this past weekend, I WAS going to give $200 for me and my FH to go upstate to her wedding (we had to get a hotel to stay over), but family and friend talked me into $150. I know I went over the per plate cost of $53 per person (she got an AWESOME deal), but I just didn't want to be stupid in giving a lot more to her and then when my wedding comes around, feeling like it wasn't reciprocated, if you know what I mean. I'm a very generous person, but I'm not stupid! Plus, money is so tight right now, I can't afford to be very generous at the moment! I felt guilty 'only' giving $150 for two, but I felt better knowing I covered the plate. Plus I got bitten by bed bugs at the hotel!

Re: How much do you give?
I think at least $200, that is what we have always given in the past. $200 would about cover 2 plates at my own wedding... I will probably increase to $250 for future weddings just because I would like to give a little extra..

Re: How much do you give?
With knowing the prices that are out there i give 300 to any wedding, if i know i am not going to have that kind of money i kindly decline.. i don't want to go to a party and not be able to cover my plate.
