How much do you give?

Original post by ellebelle1

While we are on the topic, I'm curious how much everyone gives as gifts. I recently went to a wedding for a friend (regular old friend), and we(FH and I) gave $300, but then we were told by others that that was a very large amount. So, now I'm thinking about what's standard for a regular friend. Now, for my next wedding I think I will give $200 (from my fiance and I). Then, I have a wedding of a co-worker and I'm thinking $175. What do you all think.

we give $300. I usually like to give a little more than to just cover our plates.

With knowing the prices that are out there i give 300 to any wedding, if i know i am not going to have that kind of money i kindly decline.. i don't want to go to a party and not be able to cover my plate.

I don't agree with this at all. I didn't invite people to my wedding and expect them to cover their plate. I wanted my guests there because they are my friends and my family and I wanted them to share our day because they are important to me. I would be extremely upset knowing that someone declined because they didn't think they could afford it. Call me crazy, but I think that's the wrong attitude to have. You don't get married and have a reception with friends and family expecting to get reimbursed for your costs. I would never decline a wedding because I didn't feel like I could cover the plate cost. I give what I could afford, regardless of the location, and hope that the couple invited me because they want me to share in their day. If the couple chooses to have an extravagant wedding with very expensive per person costs, how is that my problem to cover what kind of wedding they chose to have? If a lot of people declined for this reason, the couple might not even make their minimum and will wind up paying for people who aren't there! Anyway that's how I feel. I just think it's sad that people decline invitations because they think they can't cover their plate. That shouldn't be.

$300.00 for friends, more than that for really close friends and family

For friends, usually $200 - $250.

For family, usually $300

I don't take into consideration the location of the wedding. That was the couple's decision as to where and when they chose to get married. I base my gift more on the relationship with the couple.

Now that I have a decent paying job, I give 300 regardless of venue.

what we got varied a lot, but $200 or $300 was the average for a couple.
