Re: how much do you give these days???

For a close, close friend (someone I grew up with), I gave about $500/$600. For a close friend, $350 or $300 (depending on whether they had an engagement party); and all others... now I am giving $250 because seeing how much weddings cost, I feel that I should give a little more than the normal $200.. but that's just my opinion.

We give anywhere form $250-$500 depending on who it is.

We usually give about $200. standard....obviously for my brother it got bumped up to $1000 (only brother) and for close friends it would get bumped up also (prob. to $275 or 300).

What really helped me out is the first time I made up index cards where I kept track of having the invite written/sent/returned and their response and also if they attended shower & what their gift was for engagement/shower/wedding. It seems that what comes around/goes around--Not in a bad way.

For those newlyweds what did YOU find was the 'average' given for 'regular' guests (not extremely close ones or bridesmaids?)

Does anyone know what the avg. gift would be for an out of state wedding. I am going to a wedding in RI and what to know if the price LI avg hold for out of state.

I had my wedding in May and the average gift for a couple was $200. As said above, those who were closer to me gave me more.

these amounts are making wme wish I invited all of you to our ewdding!
We got on average $200 from friends - some lower, not many higher
for a close friend I would be inclined to give $250

I think Long Island weddings are more expensive to begin with, so if it's an out-of-state wedding, you could probably give less, if you are interested in covering the cost per plate. But I think the best thing is to give what you can afford. It's nice if you can at least cover the cost of the plate, but I know that I would rather someone be at my wedding than NOT go because they couldn't afford it....

we just went to a wedding on Sat - FH's good friend from college that we really don't even see that often anymore.
We were going to give $250, but then he decided to bump it up to $300 at the last minute.

Seeing these figures, I am terrified to ever go to a wedding again!!!!

Am I cheap, or just REALLY poor???

We've been giving $200 unless I'm in the wedding, and then I give more depending on my relationship and my role in the wedding.

Well, rule of thumb - cover your plates - which would be $200 - 250.

For our good friends we give $300 - 350.

We just got married and we got a range of amts - average probably $200/couple. Some giving between 300 and 500 and others giving 100 or 150. But, the people that gave less than 200 were all relatives that live outside NY and aren't as up to date with weddings.

Re: how much do you give these days???

I don't like the cover your plate rule - b/c not everyone can do that -and I think it is impolite to know what someone paid for their wedding JMO - I believe that you give as much as you can afford- whether that is 100, 200, 600, or even 1,000. (I usually give 250-400 depending on whether I can afford it or not). If I covered my plate my friends would be getting MUCH less closer to 200.

Just a question that I was curious about - when you all say cover your plate - (PLEASE do not take this as a controversal question I am simply curious or maybe naive) do you call the hall and ask what the couple is paying? If so - what do you give if it is at a private club? And do you only work in the food or do you add a portion for the entertaiment, favors, centerpieces (like an extra 50$ etc)?

For a really close friend - $400, for anyone else $250. I used to think $200 was good, but after panning a wedding, I know differently
