Technically if the person doing your trial owns her own business, you are not supposed to tip (because they get 100% of the fee for themselves).
A good rule of thumb for tipping is 20% of the total cost if you were happy with the result.

I got my makeup trial for free. My friend did it for me. I sent her a thank u card! I tipped my hair guy 20 bucks because my trial was ridiculously expensive!!!
