How much $$$ is a good gift for a friend's wedding?
Original post by cluelessbride
A friend of my FH is getting married this May. He is the first of our group to get married. What is an apporporiate amount to give? We think the per person cost of the reception is about $120. So would $250 be ok or should we go higher?

Depends on how close you are to the person and what you can afford but the $100 per plate rule isnt always right because most people spend more than that (i know I am) and you are basically just paying for your plate, anything above is really a gift when you think about it right so imho I think 250 is perfect.

Can someone please e-mail all of my relatives this info because they think $125 per couple is enough to give for a wedding (Try $125 per person) Ah, but it's the thought that counts right?

haha you guys would freak out if you knew how much money most indian people give at weddings! lets just say a family of four pays enough to cover one plate .. but i guess family and close friends really go overboard so maybe it evens out?
but probably not .. haha.

in general, long island is more expensive than elsewhere for getting married. Outside Long Island, 125 a couple would be a generous gift. My sisters reception( edmunds in garden city) cost $100 a couple and edmunds included a dj. she didnt even break even. My cost is $150 a couple. I think Id be upset if people gave less than $200 a couple. Since thats the minimum we would give.

butterfly...I mean this is in the nicest and kindest way - prepare yourself for your wedding gifts. Not everyone will give $100 per person. Some of your guests will overwhelm you with their generosity and others, well, just won't.
We usually give $300 and up. Depending on who is getting married and where the wedding is. For some reason we have had to travel far to most of the weddings we have been invited to so that prevents us from giving more generous gifts sometimes (i.e. we had to go to CA for one. That made it hard to be as generous as we would have liked, esp since it was 3 months before our wedding)

I already know that enough people wont give me that amount. One of my friends got $25 as a gift from a young married couple, another got a $50 crystal piece from 3 people... I know that some people wont give much. And the people who I want to be there I will not be looking at how much they give.... Its the people that I dont care to invite who i have to, to be polite... I will be disapointed if they dont cover their amount... and the farthest people are less than an hour car ride so I dont have to worry about anyone have an expensive trip.
