Hello girls, has you can tell from my previous posts I am amidst trying to get the cake figured out. The prices these people charge are crazy right? How much is everyone paying and for how many people? Also can anyone explain to me this whole 'fondant' thing/gum paste roses vs. buttercream with buttercream roses?
Thanks you girls are the best!

Re: HOW MUCH IS EVERYONE PAYING FOR THEIR CAKE?
Fondant is a clay like substance found on many beautiful wedding cakes. Fondant is edible if you want but varries in taste depending upon the quality. It can be vanilla or choc. flavored and colored to your liking.
Full fondant covered cakes can go as high as $12 a slice depending upon the the detail of the designs. They will fully cover each layer in fondant and then over that put on designs made of fondant as well. Between the cake and the fondant will be a layer of buttercream so if your guests do not eat the fondant there will still be icing on their cake.
Buttercream cakes can range from $3 and up per slice depending upon the designs as well. They can have frosting decorations and/or fondant decorations.
Don't forget that fillings and special flavors or intricate designs will up the cost per slice. Talk to your vendor with your ideas and the number of guests you anticipate and they will calculate the size and price of your cake. Good luck

I have no idea how much our cake is since it's included in our package at our RH. But as we were looking around, prices seem ridiculous- we generally saw $3-$7 per piece!!!!

The prices above were for buttercream as I'm not a fan of the taste of fondant

My hall supplies it so we will be getting buttercream.
IMO, buttercream tastes better. Someone told me that you aren't even really supposed to eat the fondant, but peel it off. . .someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Regardless, I don't like how fondant tastes, personally, but it does look gorgeous on cakes :)

Re: HOW MUCH IS EVERYONE PAYING FOR THEIR CAKE?
Not sure what they cost, our hall includes the cake so we didnt price out other options
As for fondant v. buttercream, there are lots of posts about that on here. basically fondant is a hard sugary outside that lets you get more detail, is usually more expensive, and some people say doesn't taste as good. Our hall doesnt do fondant, so we didn't really consider it. If we had the choice I'm not sure which we would pick -- I prefer the taste of buttercream but some fondant cakes are gorgeous.
We're doing a full vienesse so i dont think the cake matters all that much. still trying to decide on flavors, fillings, shape, designs.

Re: HOW MUCH IS EVERYONE PAYING FOR THEIR CAKE?
i am not getting it through my RH, i went to an outside vendor bc of the design i wanted. It can range anywhere from $5-12 for fondant and even higher. I used cakes by Jay and LOVE him, he does such beautiful work, his range from $6-8 a slice depending on the design you get. Buttercream ive seen from $1.50 a slice-3-4 a slice again depends where you go bc everybody charges different prices and depending on the design of the cake

My cake is included. I have the chocolate fountain and vienese platter included. At the time the cake is out, most guests will be too hammered to tell the difference anyway-imo.

my cake will be displayed from the time guests get there, many weddings ive been too the cake is out from the time you get there.
BUt yeah if you want something that your RH can provide then definitely just go through your RH. What i wanted they cant do and even just upgrading it, dont know if the bakery would've been able to do it.
I know for others it seems stupid but from the moment i got engaged the first thing i started looking at is cakes, i dont know why but i love a unique cake and the way it looks and so does FH. So for us it was something we REALLY wanted. But if its not important and something you havent really thought about alot then get it through the RH and save the money. If its round or square and not too many details they can duplicate a pic you bring in.

Re: HOW MUCH IS EVERYONE PAYING FOR THEIR CAKE?
I dont know if I have mentioend by we are getting married in CA where I grew up, so planning has been rather difficult. Thank you girls so much for your input. So far I have two runners up for cake one who charges 2.5 a slice and does beautiful work but there are some conflicts becuase she has another brides so i would have to get her there early, get my wedding planner to open the mansion, etc and also she only does buttercream. Then there is another guy who has great classic cakes and does the whole fondant/gum paste roses and he comes out to about 4 a slice, which is spectacular. So my parents went to sample his yesterday and he siad he has me down for that date and I can sign contract/leave deposite when I come, so I am really happy about that! Now I can actually make the choice and have the tastings without worrying they will get booked up.
Any thoughts?

4 a slice for fondant is amazing go for it if its what you want.
For fillings fh and i picked white poundcake with baileys cream and 2nd filling is sourdough cake with raspberries and chocolate truffles which i absolutely love
