to have your bms spend on a bridesmaid dress... i found one i like but don't know what is the average price of an appropriate dress

The weddings I've been average around 300 with alterations. You know your girls, and if they can afford it and they love it, do it!

I was worried about the same thing... I chose a floor length gown, and it is $213 after tax (not including alterations). Since it is a long gown, my BMs do not have to buy matching shoes, which alleviates that expense.

I personally think about 200 is good. I was in one where it was over 300 and I thought that was OD

I thought anything over 200 before alterations were too much.

Mine came out to be $180ish

so with shoes and alterations it will hopefully not exceed 250.

My bm dresses were $160 I would say nothing over $200.

the dress that my BM liked are about 230, before alterations. i wanted to keep them under 200, but they insisted on this specific Jim Hjlem, bc as they said 'we can def wear this again'

If they can definitely wear it again and it's not in some random color or crazy style, then I think it's okay to spend a little more. BUT if it's something that they can really only wear that one time, I think 200 is a good cap.

Here's the catch though - 200 is a good for floor length dresses, but not for tea length dresses. I have a friend that's making us spend $250 on tea length dresses and I think that's a little much...

I would check with your bridesmaids and see what they all like/can afford and take it from there!

I got mine from J-Crew no alterations needed and they can wear it again. They paid $140.

ITA since they have to get shoes, hair, makeup, nails.. things start to add up

I am trying not to look at anything that is over 200 before tax.

I really wanted to keep the dress under $200 because I know not everyone can afford to spend more in combination with hair, make up, and everything else.

Their dresses came to $175 including tax.
Alterations cap at $85.00

Re: how much is too much

It depends on how much they can afford. I once had to spend over 200 on a dress after taxes and I was pretty shocked. I just didn't understand why a dress that was only meant to be worn once had to be so expensive. I don't even spend that much on dresses I hope to wear again. So yeah, just ask your bridesmaids what they would be comfortable spending.

thats the dress my girls agreed on. and in this color. iam not 'making' them get their make-up done, since they all do a great job at that already, its an option. and if they can do there own hair thats cool too. we're not using a 'bridal' hair salon, going to my fav lady who charges me like 30 bucks anytime i do my hair :)
and we found great shoes on piperlime for 16 bucks and i ordered them for the girls :)
so even though the dress is pricey, we are saving in other areas, and i can see this dress being worn again.

Every place I went my dresses were $220 before tax and then there was a $75 alterations cap also before tax. I just felt that was too much to ask of them... I went to Burton's and got my dresses for $160 with a $60 cap on alterations.

I would give them a call, sometimes they'll even quote you over the phone (they know they have the best prices and no one is going to match them - I tried).
