How much is too much? BM Dresses

My poor MOH is in 4 weddings in 3 weeks next summer. I keep telling her that she needs to piss some people off.

Anyway, one of her brides just sent her the BM dress that she'd like them to buy. It's $270!! What would you guys do in this situation? I told her to get a quote off of Netbride to see if it's cheaper there. Would it be totally inappropriate to say that she can't afford a gift if she spends so much on the dress?

WOW, that's a TUFF situation...

I don't know if I would, myself, say that to the bride-- I would probably LIKE to say it but in reality I don't think I could... I would just go to Phyllis at gownfind or netbrides-- something like that-- and buy it the cheapest I could get it.

So sorry, she is in a sticky situation... I think 270 is pricey but I have heard of higher. My sister wore Lazaro for my cousin's wedding at a pretty penny: $350 and this was three years ago. My sister had just closed on her first house too, it was tight

ETA: FSIL wore Vera Wang at $400 a dress for her friend's wedding a few years back.

I feel bad for your friend, too. $270 is a lot of money for a dress she's realistically only going to wear once.

I know I'd like to say that to the bride (and I'd hope she'd understand!), but in reality, I know I wouldn't be able to... It's especially tough since she's got other weddings she's going to be in and other dresses to purchase!

I agree I'd start looking for the cheapest she can find it online - and hopefully she'll luck out.

This is one thing I want to be really conscious of when it comes time to pick out dresses for my girls - I don't want anyone spending an arm and a leg on these dresses!

Your MOH should speak to the bride and explain the situation to her. She should just tell her that she can't afford a dress that's $270!! Maybe your MOH should drop out of this wedding, let her discuss it with the bride but that is some expensive taste and who knows how much everything else is going to cost; alterations, shoes, M/U, hair, nails, and contributing to the bridal shower and b-party all before actually giving a gift!!!!

That's a lot for a bride to ask her BMs to spend, I'm sorry your MOH is in this tough spot!!

Thanks for all of your advice. I agree that she may be taking on more weddings then she can handle, but they're all good friends so she doesn't feel like she can drop out of any of them. She just tried to get a quote from Netbride, how do you get in touch with Phyllis at Gownfind?

I absolutely refuse to have them spend anymore than 140 on the dress itself. 270!!! WOW, I would definitely try to look on the web to see if she can get it for cheaper

$270 is a lot. Mine were $190. After alterations one spent $338 (ordered gloves too) and the other spent $278. Insane how much it came too.

I do think $270 is a lot for a BM dress. I hope to pick a dress for the girls that is 150-200.

You know what, the bride should talk to her girls before she picks out a dress and ask what everyone's fiancal situation. I would talk to the bride about it. Because the bm doesn't just have to pay for the dress and gift, but shoes, hair, make up, etc...

that is a LOT of money for a dress...I thought $175 was a lot for the dress I just wore in a wedding on Sunday....plus travel costs to Boston, gifts, alterations...it adds up...

The dresses my girls are wearing at $110 from Gownfind....it is awesome!

tell me about! i don't feel bad at all.. it's still alot... but my bm dress is a dress that they can wear again at another event if they want to.

Wow that is a really tight month! I don't know about price. My MatOH wedding the BM dresses were about 195 from David's. Mine are about $150 from the Wedding Center in Commack
