How much is too much for a bridesmaid dress?

I was just in my friends wedding, we shelled out about 200-225 with alterations. A few of us had trouble getting the money together for it, but no one complained, especially since she also did pay for us to get basic manicures before the wedding, we all did our own makeup, and a friend of hers was 'hired' by her to do all of our hair.

This price would be okay if almost all the bridesmaids did not also have to book a pretty expensive hotel room for the night of her wedding since she insisted we all stay for her after party and many were traveling quite a distance to attend the wedding/ all wedding celebrations as it was.
