How much is too much for wedding gown alterations??
I'm just a bit confused about the price that I am being charged for alterations for my wedding gown. I was lucky enough to find 'the' dress. It was a bit out of my mom's budget, but the salon owner said she'd take $200 off and give me the head piece and veil for free. I went for my first fitting last week and was told that the alterations are going to be $360!! The alterations weren't even extensive. I ordered a size 2 and it fits almost perfectly. The owner told me that she had the manufacturer hem the dress before it even came to the store. I am just wondering if this is normal?? I am thinking that I am being taken advantage of because she just wanted the sale when I first tried on the dress and 'took off' $200 from the price of the dress and 'threw in' the headpiece and veil just to add on to the price of alterations in the end... I just wanted your opinions :) Thank you!

I don't think you should have to pay for alterations BEFORE your first fitting. How are they supposed to know if they made the right changes?
I spent about 1200 on my dress, and I'm expecting alterations to be an additional $350. But check with the other ladies who have already had their alterations.

If the dress is already hemmed, and it fits, what is being altered or tailored on the dress ? Most places put a cap on the alterations. I went to a couple of stores looking at dresses, and if they did not cap the alterations, I went elsewhere.

Yeah most places have a cap on alterations. The place I bought my dress from has a cap of $525 or $535 i forgot at the moment. Doesnt mean it will cost $525 but that it can't go past that amount no matter how much work they do to it. $200-300 is average for alterations.

mine are 350.00!!!! 200 JUST to hem the dress and 150.00 for the bustle!!!! Sick right?????

mine was $400 but she took it in at the top, do the bustle, and hem the bottom. all of that work required her to remove all of the beading (and there was ALOT) and put it back on later so it was totally justified.
is there alot of beadwork to your dress?

$360 sounds a bit high to me. When I bought my dress I was told alterations were capped at $200. But when the dress came in it fit me almost perfectly plus I needed to get a hollow to hem measurement before they ordered the dress because of the beadwork at the bottom of my dress. So it came in already hemmed like yours. All they needed to do was the bustle, sew in cups and put in a stitch near the bust where it was just a little too big. Altogether it cost me $75. It sounds a little shady to me that they are already telling you how much the alterations will be before you've even had a fitting. Good luck!

In my opinion, they shouldn't be quoting you a price for alterations before you even put the dress on and start anything.

mine were $360 & I think it was way too high but i guess it's not that much more than most of the other girls now that I'm readng

I'm paying $400 for my alterations though they are pretty extensive. I'm having the whole bottom part of the dress reconstructed. I went elsewhere and found alterations to be cheaper (though just for basic not the reconstructing the bottom of the dress) but the dress was way more money at those places so it ended up being the same.

They capped mine MINE @ $225, but bustles are additional. I think it depends on the type of fabric.

You should of been told that it was hemmed at the manufacturer and that it is a extra charge to do so since the salon you ordered it from was not including that charge in the 'cap'. That is usually $200. Then the cap on their alterations depends on the shop. Mine was $250 but other places charge more or less. Bussle is always extra usally $15-20 per button or it depends on your bussle.
Your alteration cap should of been put on your receipt when you left the deposit.

Yes they canget a little ridiculous. I think Kleinfelds is $595.00. I am expecting to pay about $300 where I got mine.

alteration are $450 for me. i think that's a little ridiculous. i guess i should have asked before i bought the dress from them. i definitely recommend girls who are buying their dress in the future to ask how much alterations are.

Klienfelds charged 575 I believe. It all depends on the store, the amount of alteration, the dress, and what you're willing to pay.

Thank you so much for all of your input, girls! Live and learn, I guess. I definitely should have asked about a cap on the price of alterations.. but seriously Kleinfelds charges more than $500!!! That is crazyyyyyy. I am thinking I went into the wrong business. Does anyone know of a good tailor school I can go to so I can learn to be a seamstress and become a millionnaire??

I'm so disgusted by how much I paid for alterations. My seamstress literally had almost no work to do on my dress, other than the bustle. Almost nothing else. And I was charged over $600 for her to alter it and have it dry cleaned. And the reason I went to her was because I kept hearing how reasonable her prices are!!! Well, not for me!!!!
