Should I feel bad if the bridesmaid dresses I like cost around $200 (more if you add tax and alterations)? None of my bridesmaids have very much money but I had a vision for the dresses i like and only saw it at one store .... is $200-ish bad?

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
My dresses were $248 for the short ones and $298 for the long ones. I bough their dresses as their main gift I got 10% off but it was a lot. I think most people spend like $150ish on BM dresses. KerriJohnS wedding I was just a BM in our dress was like $143 (plus $20 rush and $8 shipping for me ) plus my alterations were $75. All the girls alterations were $75 and the lady was amazing!!

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
My girls dresses were $195 but since we ordered them all together at Alexandra Boutique in Forest Hills, they gave it to us for $155 + tax.
ETA: We ordered 5 dresses.

Mine are $166 plus alterations. If you shop around a lot of stores are willing to work with you. I found the dress for cheap, call the store I wanted to order them from and they beat the lowest price I found.

My girls paid $100 but the original price was $125. I don't think $200 is too bad though.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
If they dont' have much money and you know that, it seems kind of like an imposition to ask them pay that much for an outfit to be part of your day. Sure it's their choice on whether to participate or not but it's putting them in a difficult position to either have to say no to their friend or spend money they don't have. keep in mind that they also have to pay for alterations, shoes, the shower, the bachelorette party, hair/makeup, and possibly a gift. You can get a much cheaper dress that's still nice IMO unless you want to chip in maybe $75-100 to offset the cost.

Mine are over $300 but we're paying. I wouldn't ask my girls to spend that.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
Thanks everyone for your opinions, facts, and otherwise :)
If I go with the more expensive dresses, I'll probably tell the girls that they can get their hair/makeup done anywhere they want (even if that means they do it themselves). Similar things with shoes - they can wear whatever shoes they want (I'm only going to say which color they should be).
I guess i'll have to see what happens when I find 'the perfect bridesmaid dresses' :)
Thanks again!

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
We haven't chosen for sure but the one that we liked is $300 plus 20% off because we are buying from the store where I bought my dress. I have an MOH and 1 BM. I am paying for my Moh's dress as her gift for being in my bridal party. The bridesmaid is in a good financial situation and assured me she is comfortable paying for a dress. That said, you can definitely get beautiful dresses in the $150 range.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
Its really a personal choice. I didnt want to look at dresses over $160. The ones I have picked out range from $155-$159, plus alterations. My BM all have families so I realy wanted to keep the price on the low side.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
Mine are approx $300 but they don't have to be altered (I'm doing two birds) and then I said they could wear black shoes of their choice & don't have to get their hair and makeup done if they don't want to.
Out of 11 bridesmaids, 4 of them don't want to get either done.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
if you know they don't have a lot of money...its a bad idea to ask them to spend over $200 with alterations and tax for a dress they will most likely only wear once (jmo). if money wasn't an issue then no prob but since you know in advance, i would most def tell them waaay ahead of time about the dress and offer to pay for half.

Re: How much should Bridesmaid Dresses cost?
I have been in a lot of weddings, and I think 200 is pretty average. I don't think its a crazy amount to ask people to pay.
