I am going to a co-workers wedding in North Carolina in a few weeks. Does anyone have any thoughts as to how much $$ is appropriate for a wedding in the south? TIA

Whatever you can afford. i do not think location should matter on how much of a gift you should give. JMHO.

Re: How much to give?
I would probably buy something off of their registry since that is what they do there.

Are they coming to your wedding? Just asking because it would be easy to figure based on their gift to you.
Personally, after going to college in the south and going to lots of weddings in the south and midwest, I'd give a gift from the registry (that's the way they do it there).

I think a gift off the registry is the way to go.
I don't get it, but money is not as appreciated in other parts of the country.

I definitely feel you should go with something from the registry, they dont ever seem to give cash at weddings in the south. That way you can even have it shipped instead of bringing it with you

I agree. My sis in law is from Texas and everyone gave gifts. Not expensive ones either. Maybe 25-50 dollars....It's just different everywhere else....Think of it as a chance to save some money for once! j/k

in my opinion.... when you go to the wedding.. you have at least cover you own plate. so that's mean where you get marry is play an important role. such as in ny everything is very expensive. but if you compare w/ another city perhaps over there is less expensive. and sometimes it's depand on how much you can give to them too.

Re: How much to give?
I live in the south now, in Georgia. Of the weddings I've been to here, I've been told to give gifts off the registry, so that's what I did. That's what everyone did. It is different everywhere though! Is there anyone you can contact there that you know that can give you more insight?
Since you are coming from OOT though, carrying a gift can be a pain in the arse, so if you want to make it easy on yourself, I'd give cash. There's nothing wrong with it, even in the south! If it was me, I'd probably give around $150-$200. Depends on how close you are with the bride/groom also. HTH.

Re: How much to give?
Definately give something off the registry. As far as how much to spend, you need to find out what type of wedding it is. I went to a baptist wedding in the basement of a church in South Carolina. No booze, no DJ, no sit down dinner. We drank pineapple juice. I spent $200 on them. I don't regret spending so much because she was my closest friend at the time, but I definately over-spent.
I have to go to a wedding in Maryland, but I'm matching the gift they gave me for my wedding.

how are you supposed to know how much your plate costs wherever you go?
if you were invited to a wedding at Oheka Castle, would you give $700?
IMO, you give what you can afford.

I would agree, I'd give about $150. There really isn't a way to know how much pp someone is paying, especially oot.
ETS: For a wedding in the south, I would give a gift off the registry of approx $150 value and I would have the store send it so that I do not need to carry it.
