how much to give as wedding gift?

DH's aunt is getting married this June -
She and her fiance gave us a VERY VERY generous gift for our wedding - we could never afford to give them that same amount back. They are a little bit older - it is her second wedding but his first. What do u think is appropriate amount to give?? I really don't want to come off as cheap...

maybe instead of cash you should go the present route.

or do a gift certficate to a nearby spa or something with a gift from the registry.

i feel awkward about giving people cash. i think its a midwest thing. but... i know thats what people prefer and what people usually do out here.

i dont know ... sorry ...

just give what you can afford! i'm sure she understands that you are younger! it's not required to match the gift esp from a younger relative and for a second marriage.

That would be hard for anyone but usually around $100 per person. It should cover your plate so if you know the hall is more you might want to add more to it but if you can't afford it give what you have and then you can always get something else later. We went to a wedding and only could give $100 because we are working off one salary and planning a wedding. When I ordered my Channa plaque I got them one too and a bunch of other things to make up for it

I think $300 is a nice gift.

When you say generous, about how generous do you mean (without geting too specific...)

Like if they gave you $1,000, I would def not just get them a gift.

I would say at least give them back half... JMO!!

maybe give them about $300 or if you don't want to give them money maybe a gift instead, something for their house and/or gift certificate for a weekend at a bed and breakfast (might be a bad idea, i was trying to think of something different).

It depends where they're getting married - etiquette is to at least 'cover your plate'.

I think 300 is a good gift..or as a PP said, cover your plate.

if it was very generous and you feel like you need to do something special, give a cash gift of what you can afford (200-300?) and then maybe a sentimental gift like something engraved with their wedding date and their names or a beautiful album with some pics already in it or something like that. hth!

I'd give at least $300..if you can afford to give more than you. Only you know what the most you can afford it. But I think 250-300 is good as a baseline.

I would say $300 is a good gift or at least whatever would cover your plate.

I never give less than $300. If you can manage that, I think that would be a nice gift and they should understand that you dont have the same financial situation that they do.

I never go to a wedding and give less than $300 ($150 per each me and FH). If we are in the bridal party or someone we feel much closer to we definitely give much more.

I would not give less that $300, but being that she is your aunt, older, once married,e tc... she is more established than you and FH and I don't think should would expect that you good afford to give what they gave... hard to say without knowing what they gave tho!
