One of my co-workers is getting married near her family's home in the South. FH and I were invited but couldn't attend because I've been out of the country so much and have to do all my wedding stuff on the weekends. This girl invited all of the attorneys in our 'class' at work and she's invited to my wedding as well. We hang out at office parties but we aren't really close. Since I received an invite, I know I'm supposed to send a gift, but how much?? I was going to contribute to their honeymoon registry. Thanks

I would say $50.00 is enough.

I think either $100 or the something from her registry is fine. I know it's nor correct, but most people I know are under the theory that if you don't attend you don't have to give a gift.

We got gifts anywhere from $100 - $300 from people who could not attend and most were not people we know really well... mostly our parents friends.

I would say $100-150 or a gift. Can you ask your other co workers what they are doing?

The rest of them are sort of clueless about weddings and they look at me as some kind of wedding guru (misguided, aren't they? ). So, I'm sure they'll be asking ME so I need to tell them what to do too!
Do you think if I give them $100-150 that that's what they'll give me if they come to my wedding? Just curious as to how this whole thing works

Re: How much to give for a wedding I didn't go to?
Etiquette says that if you don't attend you don't have to give a gift. I was NEVER that way until after my wedding. Anyone who didn't send me a gift doesn't get a gift FROM me.
Anywho, I'd give her $100.
eta: this is tough cause they'll probably give you $200 if they attend your wedding. You'd still be 'out' some cash because you're going to have to pay for them to be there, plus you would have already given them $100.
I'm just giving numbers from my experience, though...

Jen, She might very well give you the same amount that you give her, even though she will attend your wedding. Also, southern weddigns give less cash and more registry type gifts at the wedding. As an aside, if your fellow attorneys are comming up to you and asking what is an appropriate gift, they might also have your wedding present in mind. I would say something like I give a different amount based on whether I am attending the wedding or not. Lisa

If you were really close with them i would say to give what you would have given if you attended, esp. since they are coming to yours. BUT if you are not than i would send $100.

Lisa, good point! We actually all had another wedding back in May that most of us went to and I got that question from them. I told them that they should give the couple AT LEAST $100 a person for that wedding (it was at a really nice place and the groom didn't invite everyone -- it was all people that hung out outside of work). Don't worry, I've been 'laying the groundwork'

I would send them $100 and call it a day. Your not going, they aren't paying for you to eat. $100 is a good gift.
