FH and I are invited to a wedding soon and do not know how much to give as a gift. It is one of FH old friends from high school that is getting married. He talkes to this person 2 or 3 times a year and has seen them once in the last 8 years.
FH and I will only be going to the ceremony, we cannot make it to the reception (which they are paying $55 a head).
Anyone know how much we should give as a gift?
Thanks ladies!!

Re: How much $$ would you give ?
I would say $100, more if you want to be generous. You could also just buy a gift.

Re: How much $$ would you give ?
I'm going to throw a number out and say $100...too cheap??...too much?? I don't know what's the norm to give when you don't attend the reception. But if you all live in New York, then I guess you'd give a little more than, say, an out of state guest who can't attend?

Thank you all! We were not going to invite them to our wedding, but since we were invited, now I think we are obligated to invite them.

You're not obligated to invite them to your wedding. Just because they had space to invite you, doesn't mean that you will.
I'd also give either $100, or send a gift off the registry.

If you're not going to the reception I would get a registry gift if I were you. GL

I just re-read your post...if your not going to the reception $100 is more than generous, or a gift off their registry.

Registry gift is more than appropriate. I would not feel obligated to invite them to your wedding.

Re: How much $$ would you give ?
Since this is a friend (not family) I would agree with the $100 cash or a gift from the registry at an equal value to that amount.

Re: How much $$ would you give ?
Personally I don't think it matters how much the person is paying per plate. Even if someone was having a BBQ wedding in their backyard. Who cares how much they spent? I would give what you would normally give. I think $100 is being cheap and I defiantely wouldn't give something off their registry. It isn't a shower. JMHO

Re: How much $$ would you give ?
If you don't go to the weddign, you arne't obligated to invite them to yours. But you are attending the cermeony, so I'm not sure where that leaves you. I gave a co-worker $100 from both of us when I didn't attend her weding, but I see her everyday. Iwould have gone if it wasn't in Florida. I went to her shower. We are not that close outside out of work, but she is invited to my wedding.
So, I thought $100 was appropriate. And I couldn't affor more at the time. If it was someone I wasn't close to & I got the invite, and I was like' I'm invited to their wedding????' I would just buy something off the registry, around the $50 dollar mark, probably.
