How necessary are 'Save the Dates'?

We just booked our wedding, so we officially have the day. It's not a holiday weekend, or a weekend where people would normally book other travel. We're trying to save $$ where we can. So, HOW necessary would you say save the dates are?

How necessary are

Do you have a lot of out of town guests? They might appreciate knowing ahead of time so they can make travel arrangements.

You can get very inexpensive ones to save $$

ooooohh, good point. If it were up to ME, I'd already have them proofed and ready to go, lol. But, FH sees them as an unnecessary expense. But, a lot of the out of town guests are HIS family, so maybe when I put it to him like that, he'll change his tune!

You can print your own save the dates for free. just buy card stock & envelopes and be creative. visit www.weddingchicks.com and click on free printables :) That's what I'm doing! You get tons of ways to customize them as well

I got a groupon for Vistaprint and got 100 STD magnets for $25. There are definitely cheap options out there!

I didn't want to buy them either but I got a VistaPrint groupon and got magnets done. I think I put $25 plus shipping. You can always DIY

I wouldn't have gone crazy over them if they weren't included in our photography package. I would go on VistaPrint and look for a coupon code at RetailMeNot.com.

I decided not to do them, figured it would save me some money and time

We aren't doing them. It's mostly relatives or close friends and they know the date already. I'm not going to spend more money, no matter how small, on something most people will throw out.

For me personally, I like having that reminder on my fridge of the wedding. I'm doing them because I think they're fun and don't mind spending the money on it.

For me, they are totally necessary ...we have a TON of OOT guests. However, there are definitely ways to make them on the cheap!

Thanks so much, ladies!! I think I am definitely going to do them. We do have a lot of out of town guests, and this will give them time to arrange flights, babysitters, etc. I have found ways to do them on the cheap, thanks to you girls. Thanks again!!

you used to be able combine retailmenot & groupon but i heard they cracked down.
