I was talking to a friend about dry cleaning recently and how I seem to always have a high bill at the dry cleaner's (a lot of dry clean only stuff) and she said she only dry cleans things a few times a winter. Maybe this is the secret.
How often do you dry clean and does it depend on the item?

I don't clean them every time...but it depends on the item...
pants I will do every other or third wear...sweaters I will do less often...
Its cheaper...and I also think they hold up better...

pants I try to get at least 3 wearings out of, so I usually take them off as soon as I get home, hang them up, sometimes bring them into the shower w/ me so they get steamed, etc. I try not to buy too many dry clean only tops because I will only wear it twice, tops, before cleaning.

I dry clean after every wear except for suit jackets. I could never wear pants more than once.

My dry cleaning bills are outrageous. Dry cleaners love me! I found a great and cheap dry cleaner finally in LI (LI dry cleaners are more $$ than in NYC and Queens!! I couldn't believe it when I moved out here!) But this new one is 10 pieces for $25!! (not including coats or dresses or stuff like that - but suits and pants and swaters!)
My casual dry clean stuff like sweaters and pants - after one wearing (unless it was for a really, really short time).
I wear suits every day to work except Fridays so I can't afford to clean them after every wearing. I wear them probably only 2x before dry cleaning in the hot months and try for 3x depending on the suit in the winter months. If I wear them out or for a really long work day then I would probably get them dry cleaned right away. The shells or sweaters I wear under the suits - only one wearing.

My DH's best friend owns a very high-end Men's clothing store and says that you should NOT dry clean your clothes after every wear...more like every 3rd.
He says it ruins the fibers of the fabric and your clothes can lose shape and become dull....they can also get that 'shiny' appearance.

This is good to know. I usually wait about three wears unless I go to a smokey place or spill something on me.
I just couldn't believe that my friend only dry cleans her sweaters 2 times a season. I guess it depends on how many sweaters you have.

I'm super anal so shirts/sweaters I do after one wear, pants depends on how long I wore them and where I was. I know that sounds silly, but if I was just in the office all day I'll wear again, but if I was out on the subway or train then they defintely go the cleaners after that. And suit jackets I do when I can't remember when I brought them last.

pants, every 3 or 4 wears depending on the condition they are in sweaters and other tops every 2 to 3 wears
coats i do twice a year. once in march or so when it gets warmer and put them away and then also mid-january if it's been a crappy winter (like this one).
