We have a lot of empty rooms downstairs also, and two empty bedrooms upstairs, so we shut the vents off in those rooms. I think that saves us a ton of money, as our house is big and already costs a good amount to heat. We get oil about every 5 weeks, but it never gets below 3/4 tank. We also put the thermostat both upstairs and down at 65 during the day when we are not home.
If you have 2 zone heat, you should be able to turn down the downstairs and still have heat upstairs...we put our downstairs to 66 when we go to bed, and the upstairs zone is up to 70. Its usually fine. I do find that the upstairs does not ever seem to be as warm as the downstairs though, which I dont get since I thought heat rises. We are having the builder come out to check the heat zones to make sure they are set right.

Adrienne, Please tell me you have a large tank also...You only use a quarter of a tank every five weeks!? Your house must be as tight as a drum!
We use 3/4 of a tank in really cold weather but ours only holds 275 gal.

My DH is horrible w. the heat, but not that bad...my tank reads that 3/4 is almost empty- it reads what has been used, not whats left. I think Karens is the same.
We dont have a large tank though, I think its 225. We do have a fireplace downstairs, so we use that most nights-it makes the whole downstairs really warm, so we dont have to worry about heat there.
