How old is too old?

How old is too old?

A couple of weeks ago there was a post 'do you feel the pressure to get pregnant?'. Now i answered ABSOLUTLY NOT!! I never had. I always feel when i am ready is when i am ready. And to hear these 'pressures' from girls much younger than me has got me thinking...Maybe i should be really thinking about this, i am older than most here...
SO it made me think about age and pregnancy...so i was wondering...
What do you think is too old to start having kids? And i am not talking about mental readiness i am talking about age..
What age is too old????

Re: How old is too old?

I think we had this discussion on parenting very recently.

I don't know if there is a 'too old' becuase everyone's bodies are different. Obviously, if you wait until your 40s, you might have some more problems than someone 20 years younger. But my aunt didn't start having children until she was in her mid thirties and she had her third this past summer at age 38.

I've thought about this too... I remember reading somewhere that pregnancies after age 35 can be risky, in terms of the increased statistical likelihood of birth complications and defects. Does anyone else know?

Blah, blah, blah - you don't count. Biology doesn't prevent you from starting a brood of Yankee haters in your seventies.

oh goodness. i don't know if I want to have kids and this age thing really bothers me. I don't want to decide to have kids later on and then find out I waited too long.

Oh decisons decisions. I am 27 and I am no where near ready for children.

Among my friends, there was this kind of mentality that you HAVE to have your kids while you're in your 20's or you'll spontaneously combust or something, I don't know. I didn't and I still don't share that mentality (I'll be 30 this October). I do, however, want to have my child before I'm 35. If I haven't had children by 40, I probably won't try.

35 and older is considered high risk.

I had Damien when I was 35. I will try for #2 when I am 37. I had an amnio which is optional.

One of my co-workers had her first child when she was 40 and oops ( )her second child right before she turned 42.

I read an article that said women start to lose.. uhmm probablity of pregnancy.. % chance of getting pregnant at the age of 27 and progressing from there.

I know I explained that poorly. I found out when i was 27, hahaha

My SIL said it gets really rough over 30. But I only HOPE to start at 30 to try to conceive. Im 28 now.

I think it's different for each woman (body, heredity, health, etc)

Stars have kids in their 40's because I think they have the money and resources available to really make it happen if they want.

The average Jane just has to deal with what she has.

Re: How old is too old?

my step mom just had a baby at 41/42 and that is cool. i think having a baby at 48 and over is just not cool. i kind of get grossed out when i hear a women had a baby at 54. what is she thinking? sorry if i offended anyone who knows someone who had a baby at that age, but personally i think that that is too old.

yes, this is true - and in this day and age where we have career women and advances in technology, people have a false notion that having kids whenever is possible and okay.

there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking there is a biological clock and it does tick. i personally believe, biologically speaking, it is in a females best interest to have at least the first child before 35...

i dont think ther is really an age...
there are some people who maybe considered too old, but they may be the best parents...

i think it varies case by case, as long as you can 'handle' running after your kid when they are say 7 years old, then i dont think your too old

I am 28, and SO feel the pressure to start TTC in the next few years. I know quite a few women who waited a long time, and then had problems concieving. I am hoping to have my kids by 35 *fingers crossed* Personally, I dont want to have to be dealing w. teenagers in my late 50s. The horror! I want to be a young enough parent so I can relate to them. And then get them the hel! out of my house so I can retire JMO
