A couple of weeks ago there was a post 'do you feel the pressure to get pregnant?'. Now i answered ABSOLUTLY NOT!! I never had. I always feel when i am ready is when i am ready. And to hear these 'pressures' from girls much younger than me has got me thinking...Maybe i should be really thinking about this, i am older than most here... SO it made me think about age and pregnancy...so i was wondering... What do you think is too old to start having kids? And i am not talking about mental readiness i am talking about age.. What age is too old????

I think you need to have your life in order first. If that happens at 25 or 45 whose to say that it is not ok..........forget people and live your life

We are the only country that puts an age on child birth, damn if your 50 and you want to start who the hell am I to say anything
Im 32 and people are like what are you waiting for...
Couldn't agree more. I know 20 year olds who are amazing moms .. and 40 year olds that have no right to even THINK about becoming a mom!
When I was a teenager (before I realized what a big responsiblity it was) I thought I wanted my kids b/f I was 30.. uh -huh ..
Then in my 20s, there was NO WAY I felt ready for a child. I was very mature, but enjoyed my freedom ... and I didn't meet FH until I was 31!
Now at 33 I feel ready to begin trying after we are married .. We'll probably still wait a year, so that would make me around 35 before we start TTC.

Exactly!
My FSIL is due in July - first try, first pregnancy - and she will be 42 this year. My other FSIL had her first child at 38 and her second at 40. No complications, no issues. Everyone is different. I know plenty of 20something's who are having the darndest time getting pregnant - while others are breeding machine's. I honestly don't think you can - or should - put an age on child birth.
With that said, I'm 31 and haven't heard the ticking...nor am I ready to hear it.

I will be 27 this year and would like to have one in the next year or 2. I do not want to be still trying in my late thirties / early 40s. I am young and healthy now!
I think 50 is too old, although I know someone who had her 6th child at 50 and it was a complete surprise! Her first 5 were already married, in college etc.

Wise woman!!
I worked with an attorney who was TTC for a long time, at 40 she finally made it... with twin boys!!! That was 3 years ago. Late last year she gave birth another child.
I will be 30 next January (wow that's hard to say...well, type), I will most likely try within the next 5 years, but on my FH's and my own accord.

Re: How old is too old?
I am 27 - no ticking clock for me..... I don't even plan to start trying until I am AT LEAST 30....
I want to take a couple years to enjoy being married to mu hubby and take long vacations, and be selfish with our $$....ya know?
It's a very personal decision and I don't worry about the clock at all....yet!
I know in a few years, I may hear the 'ticking' a little louder...but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
The important thing is that everyone does what is right for them and their marriage...and not make this decision based on age alone!

the reason there are so many twins in this world now is because so many women need a little 'help' TTC.
there are both emotional and biological factors to consider. biologically, statistically, numbers speak for themselves. emotionally speaking, one really can't put an age on anything as it totally depends on the individual.
i am 30 and ideally would have like to have children by now. but it hasn't worked out that way. i won't put 35 as a cutoff number for me, but i will keep it in mind and take additional precautions should i elect to have children. emotionally and financially i don't think i will ever be 100% ready to have a child. this does not mean eventually i will not have one. each individual has his/her own set of 'standards', and we all just do the best we can...

You realize that we are both putting forth the same argument, you are just focusing more on the medical side.

i read/misread NYCHICK's post as not factoring in biology, which is what i thought the original post was asking...
i think IN GENERAL, people really don't think about it from that perspective anymore because of technology and women in the workplace, nothing directed towards you ...

Re: How old is too old?
I am 32 and so far childless.
I want a family but it scares me to death of actually being a mom. I've been married almost 2 yrs in september and being we are both the same age everyone is wondering when we will have kids....
In my 20s, I was wasnt ready for marriage or children as I was far too selfish and into me, my career and my social life and travelling.
I hope I will be able to have kids and I like to think I have a good chance being that my mother, maternal grandmother and both aunts all had children in their mid to late 30s.
So, I am not sure how to answer that question - I would like to say it is never too late, its only how old you FEEL.....of course biology rules us but there are so many options that I think even adopting at 50 is not too old, know what I mean???

Re: How old is too old?
I think people shoud try when they are ready-emotionally, physically and financially. That being said, of course there is such a thing as too old. Biology is what it is and technology has helped but it can't change that. The sad part is you can't know if you will be one of the women having healthy babies into her forties or struggling in her thirties. I just think women should keep that in mind.

Re: How old is too old?
I'm 34 and have been married almost 4 years now and I used to feel pressured about the fact that i haven't had a child yet. However, I no longer succumb to the everyone's interogation of why we haven't had children.
For me, waiting was all about myself AND hubby feeling ready. I wanted to do this when it was right for us - which is this year (God willing). I don't know if there's specifically a PERFECT time to have children, but honestly accepting and feeling like you can handle the responsibility is important. I've been around many friends and family with children and children are beautiful, but it's scarifice a tireless work. I think if you have the strength to keep up with a toddler and all the rigors that comes with motherhood and balancing everything else in your life, then it doesn't matter what age you are.
Woman are marrying and having babies much later in life now b/c we are pursuing careers and living fuller lives. For some women, 40 might be too old and for some 30 may be too old, it's all about opinion and perspective. I think it's all about what works for each individual, everyone is different.
