How religious are you?

Original post by marymoon

Do you got o services every week?
Just on major holidays?
Do you observe shabbat?

I'm sort of increasingly religious as far as it comes to services. I've been defintie;y going to mass on holidays and trying to go on sundays. I am trying to get FH to come with me to Jewish services, but for some reason he's not that interested, and I don't feel comfortable going alone.

I don't consider myself very religious though. I don't follow most of the rules, and I disagree with the catholic church on a lot of its teachings and approaches.

Ok, to clarify..I'm catholic, but I am ALWAYS reading about judaism, and took classes in college and I really like going to services..and although I'm not actually jewish, I consider myself to be at least partially jewish, if that's possible, in that I try to study the teachings and keep the holidays and go to services on occasion. Neither of us have EVER observed shabbat though, and I'm not sure if we ever will.

Also, i think part of what burned FH out with going to services was that we'd spend a good part of our weekend going to services since we go to church and temple

Actually Jews believe in a Messiah but that their messiah hasn't come yet. Though the Lubavitchers feel that Rebbe Menachem Schneerson is the embodiment of the Messiah and will come. Trust me, I work in Crown Heights and they are waiting for him.

I spent college going to Chabad services..I have images of the Rebbe looking down on me!

See there are just too many differences I dont see how you can be religious in both.

You can't. You can be OBSERVANT in both. Observing customs. My brother's wife is Catholic and she participates in Jewish customs. She does not go to Temple and pray. BIG difference.

That's my point though, as a product of both it's too confusing!! And you cannot be both!

Unless you join Jew for Jesus!

We are not religious at all. Never went to church in the 5 years we've known each other. I did not know he was catholic until we got engaged and his grandmother asked if the ceremony would be lutheran (an incredibly random question since she is lutheran but neither DH or I are, so I am not sure if she knows he is catholic...his two cousins are jewish and she thinks they are lutheran too).

Oh Nana . I think she's aware that we're not Lutheran, but refuses to admit it. Not like it really matters, since we never go to church anyway.

I agree with you. I don't think you can be both. My brother's child (second marriage)was baptized Episcopalian. His daughters from his first marriage are Jewish as his ex wife is Jewish. You cannot be half Jewish. IMO. Jews for Jesus confuse me.

Jews for Jesus confuse me.

Of course it does - it's an oxymoron!!! Last time I checked, being 'for Jesus' = Christian.
If there are any Jews for Jesus on here, please feel free to explain to me!

I think people confuse 'religious' and 'observant'. I do not consider myself religious, but I do consider myself observant in the Jewish faith. I also think that I will become increasingly observant as my family begins. I think children who grow up with some form of religion in their lives, tend to fare better than those who don't. IMO, religion provides a basic framework and structure to living a good life. Children need structure.

Just a thought but, many of the world's worst criminals (Hitler, Koresh, Manson, Jim Jones, Applegate)have used religion as a form of power. I don't believe that religion is what caused this, but I also know that you can lack religion in your childhood and still have structure. I think I turned out to be a pretty good person without it.

I think it would depend on which two religions...that might not make too much sense but I think if we are talking about two religions with differnt views of who or what is god or the ultimate being or whatever then I think there is too much of a conflict to be religious.
Let me add again *I think*

I just don't understand why you threw that in..when asiking if you're religious...if you're not of 2 faiths, I'm confused why you would bring that up.

Some people see it in black and white, you're one thing or another..but to me god is god, and for example, 'the big three' judaism, chirstianity and islam, have so much similarity and came from the same roots..so it's really not that different.

For example, Christians and Muslims at one point in history were all jews...some of the jewish traditions stayed while others fell by the wayside...I'm a christian reclaiming what i feel is my jewish heritage. To look at it another way, we are supposed to emulate jesus, and jesus was jewish.

I went to catholic school, and I have to disagree with your last statement. I was never taught that.

I think that Marymoon's point is that (and I'm guessing here) in Christianity we are taught to follow in the path of Jesus. By Jesus being a Jew it seems as if both religion have a crossing of paths and she is trying to investigate that further.

That makes sense.

Re: How religious are you?

Jews for Jesus are a whole different story. I don't quite understand them. But that's actually a sect that I haven't studied, so I really don't know much about them, but fomr what little pamphlets and stuff I've read, it didn't resonate with me, even though I fall into that middle ground many say doens't exist.

To me it's simple, and of course you're free to disagree, but this is how I see it. I explained earlier that I believe god has many facets and all religions are equally valid. I identify myself as a catholic. I absolutely believe in Jesus.

What I also believe is that Jesus was not attempting to found a new religion, but t reform the old one. I actualy wrote an entire paper once about why Jesus was NOT a subversive. I know there is the argument that the new covenant supercedes the old, but I don't believe this applies 100%, and neither does the christian establishment, for that matter because we still use MUCH of the old testament.

I believe that a lot of the changes and the rifts as judaism and christianity split were made for political reasons and not all of them should have been made. Jesus is a model for christians, and one of the things he did was to be a good Jew. On his last night on this ert, jesus participated in a seder. I don't understand why we wouldn't have all of the old testament holidays and customs, etc.

I also believe, and this is where I differ form most people, but I believe that we're all waiting for the same thing. Jesus will come again in some form, and THAT will also be the time the Jewish people will recognize him as the messiah, and the prophecies will be fulfilled. To put it really simply, partially because I don't have truly profound understanding of this, there are two sides of the jewish messiah, the suffering servant, or paschal lamb like jesus' first coming, and the more vengeful powerful image that I believe will be part of the second coming. God doens't go by our timeline, and no one REALLY knows. But that's just my feeling. I believe when the messiah comes (or comes again...) we'll all be united.

Anyway, you can think I'm some huge freako...but that's what I believe.

And as far as going to temple and 'really praying' I absolutely do completely immerse myself in worship at both catholic and jewish services.

Exactly. I'm not saying if you're christian and you dontinvestiagte jesus' judaism you're doing something wrong...but I believe it is one of a number of valid ways to be a follower of jesus
