how soon should you request a current baptism certificate?
i just called my FH's church and they questioned why I was requesting it so early. Our wedding is 10/04.

you definitely don't need it so early. we called and picked it up the next morning. you can probably call 4-6 weeks before the wedding.

My Church said it has to be dated within 6 months of our wedding date.

great. i'm such an idiot. I thought that could be one more thing to check off my list!! so now i'll have to call the churches again in 6 months to do it? should i call them back and tell them to cancel the ones i requested?

I already got mine like a month ago. It's very easy. You just call them and give them the time frame that you were baptized and they look it up and mail it. Might as well do it now.

No one mentioned that it had to be dated between a certain time. Does that depend on the church? They never said anything. And they asked for it at pre-cana which we already finished.

You can get it now but it will not be valid according to my Pastor. Since we are getting married in my parish, I do not need to get one but my FI needs to get his. My Pastor told him to make sure that it is dated no more than 6 months before the date of the wedding or it is not valid.

I actually got mine too early -- I got it in December 2002 for my September 2003 wedding.
I had to get another one that was dated 6 months b/f the wedding so in this case being early can make double work for you.

I agree with everyone, the certificate has to be 6 months old or less.
Don't make the extra work for yourself.

I wonder why it has to be dated within 6 months of the wedding - it's for an event that happened many years ago.

Re: how soon should you request a current baptism certificate?
I was also told six months prior to the wedding. It's because on the back of the certificate is every sacrament you've received (communion, confirmation, prior weddings) as well as annulments if you were married and divorced. They want to make sure that you've received all the sacraments if you are being married as a Catholic and also that you do not have any marriages that were not annulled.

It's funny you should ask that... I picked up my FH's baptismal certificate tonight and mine tomorrow!
We're meeting with our priest on Monday and he said we should bring it. What does your church say?
