How to be fair?

How to be fair?

My family is small, but my FH has divorced parents who each have large families. I don't know how to be fair as I am trying to figure out our engagement party. My parents are helping my sister throw it at her house. Who can we invite? Is it fair for my mother to invite her friends but for FH's parents to only invite relatives? Or should I just say certain relatives only, like only aunts and uncles? Then there would be like 25% my family and 75% his. I also don't want to overwhelm my sister with too many guests so I am looking for any guidance on how to do this. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I had a similar problem with my shower. You can't help that FH's family is larger. Does you mom feel that it needs to be equal? If not, then I would just invite family. It sounds like you have a lot of people to begin with.

I kind of feel like my family will be cowering in the corner because there will be so few of us compared to his big family that obviously all know each other and will be hanging out together.

Yes i think it is unfair that your mother can invite friends and your FIL's only relatives...
IMO i would just invite family to make it fair..regardless of ratio..

If it's going to be at your sister's house the number of people has to be limited right? So split the guest list 50/50 and let FH parent's decide to invite with their x number of guests.

I tend to think engagement parties should just be family. If your parents friends are really close to them, and to you, then that's okay...but I would keep it close friends and family, you can't really go wrong there. How are you doing it for the wedding?

For the wedding his dad and his mom are each paying for their own guests, and from the preliminary count it seems it would be pretty much 2/3 his and 1/3 mine. I'm just more concerned with the engagement party because it will be a smaller scale and I feel that the mingling might be awkward.
