How to change last name after married with everything?

So we were married August 31, 2013. What do I need to do to change my last name with the dmv, social security, credit cards, insurance, everything?

You will have to wait until you get your marriage license. I started with the DMV 1st then S.S. Big mistake! DMV was a breeze & SS took forever!! I would sugggest going to SS 1st (really early so you are in & out) and get it out of the way then hit the DMV. You can get them both done in 1 day. Then you can start the other stuff at your leisure (i.e. bank accounts, credit cards, etc)

I agree with bride2be78, SS was a pain. I waited about 2 hours and it took less than 5 minutes. They called a number, spent 5 minutes with them and then waited about 20 minutes before they called another number.

DMV download the form for a name change. You will need to take a new photo and sign your new name (I made the mistake of not practicing). If you have a car bring the title so you can change the registration.

For credit cards I just went through my wallet and called. For LIPA, Keyspan I just called before I paid the new bill. Verizon (home) I never changed since they wanted to run a credit check.

For health insurance I would call and see what they need. My husband added me to his and needed my SS card and our marriage license.

You need your marriage license for DMV, SS, and the bank. For American Express I needed to send in a photo of my new drivers license.

I haven't changed my passport since we aren't traveling out of the US. I do know that you need to mail some originals.

REALLY??? That's absurd, you're still the same person! Thanks for the heads up.....did anyone other then Verizon try and pull that?

You don't have to change all your cc. My mom still has one in her maiden name 28 years later.

It was so frustrating. I called 2x and was told the same thing.
Verizon wireless changed it over the phone in 2 seconds. So effing annoying.

You don't have to change all your cc. My mom still has one in her maiden name 28 years later.

I preferred to change all my cc in case they would ever ask for ID. Currently I have both licenses (maiden & married names) but it will eventually expire and I just wanted it all over and done with.
