How to measure the heel on a shoe?

At my fitting last night my shoes were KILLING my feet! They fit fine when I bought them, but now they're too tight to be comfortable. I may try stretching them (since they can't be returned), but I want to look for a back-up.

I can't tell how high the heel is on the shoe...where do you measure it from? I know its wither 3.5 or 4'....would a difference in either way make that big of a deal (the dress was already hemmed for length with the old shoes...)

Can anyone help?

I just measure from the bottom of the heel to the sole of the shoe...

and it depends on your dress if a half inch would make a difference... it honestly might - I'd say having heels a half inch taller would be ok, but a half inch shorter I'd be worried about tripping over the dress.

what kind of shoes are they? Can they be stretched enough? My mom told me to wear mine around the house with thick socks to break them in, but you can also take them to a shoemaker/shoe repair place and have them stretched.

My seamstress said the thing about the socks too...I just haven't had the chance to do it yet.
These are the shoes...

I was on a shoe website recently that said each manufacturer measures their heels differently--some from the back of the shoe, some from where the heel meets the arch. I'll try to find the site for you.

ETA: Found it!!
