How would you feel if they decided to have the Olympics in NYC?
And do you think this is a wise idea?
I, personally, think it's ridiculous. For a slew of reasons.....traffic, security, money, etc. I think it's just a BAD idea. I understand the want to have it here, but I don't think that it's wise.

I really don't think it's a wise idea - I know that it would bring alot of $$ to NYC but still, I think it's too risky.

Can I come with you?? We live in Forest Hills, which is where more than half of the events would be (FH, Flushing, etc). Happily it's still 8 years away so hopefully we'll be long gone by then but if not, I'm subletting my apt for mega money and going on a 3 week vacation!

On one hand I think it would be cool to have them here. But the flip side to it is how much money it will cost to build stadiums and security and such. They will never make the money back that they will spend to prepare for them. Plus, NYC is going crazy now with security without the olympics, imagine if they were here. Every other person walking around wouls be a cop or security guard. I just don't see how its possible!!

They should have it on Long Island.

I live in Long Island City, where the Olympic Village would be located, and I can't even imagine the level of chaos that will ensue. But, I think it would be exciting to be a part of the experience and be among all the athletes, and see my neighborhood hangouts thriving.

i think it would be awesome. think of all the new and updated facilities we would have. plus it's only for two weeks. you could go on vacation if you're really that concerned. i would be first in line to volunteer to help out.

Hm...that is a great idea, actually. But I really don't want it here. There's enough traffic as it is! And if all these people want to cough up money to build the facilities (because supposedly it would all come from 'private donations') why don't they see that we desperately need schools and affordable housing, and try to alleviate those problems first? To me, the Olympics should not be a priority.

I could agree with your first comments...but to say it would only be for two weeks is an understatement. It would take at least a year to build these facilities - traffic would be insane and I couldn't imagine living around there.
While I think it would be a nice boost for the city of NY...I think the bad outweigh's the good in this scenario.

OMG- I would take that as my vacation time!! It's bad enough that they're holding the Republican Convention here for the first time ever - that is just a mess waiting to happen IMO, so I just took that whole week off since I don't feel like being in a mob scene every time I enter and leave Penn Station...
I can't imagine the fiasco that would ensue if the Olympics were held here... Security, overcrowding, alternate traffice routes... Honestly, it's just asking for something to happen, I think. Anyway, this city is crowded enough!

I think this is such a bad idea!!!! New York City is already overcongested. The square footage of the city is so small compared to almost every other major city in the world. If they want to do it in New YOrk, let them do it upstate somewhere- not in the city. There is just no room!!!
Not to mention security and money issues. Cops and Fireman don't get raises, there is no money for teh city schools- but we shoudl create a stadium for several billion dollars- PLEASE. Priorities politicians!!!!

AGREED! While it would be pretty cool to be able to see the Olympics so close too home, I think there are more pressing issues that need the $$, affordable housing, eradicating the homelessness problem, securing our city on and everyday basis.....

My god... everyone is saying it would cause Money issues.
Doesn't anyone here realize that bringing the Olympics here PAYS FOR ITSELF. In fact the Olympics brings in so much cash... the city would probably have a surplus of cash left over to handle this budget crisis we are having.
This is a no-brainer to get the Olympics here. We would get a new football stadium PAID FOR (probably for the Jets). We would get upgrades to our transit system (a train extension to the Javitz center).
Screw the traffic... i can deal with some additional traffic for the 2-3 weeks or whatever it would be to get the games here.
But we probably arent getting the games cause I think we are last in the running... with Madrid the front runner.

Re: How would you feel if they decided to have the Olympics in NYC?
The US is the best at making the olympics pay for themselves -
Plus in the plan there is afordable housing afterward - they will need to house all the athletes and then that will turn into low income or affordable housing
the stadiums will be built where they have wanted them for a while and the jets might get it even before decision is made for the olympics - the olypic is trying to reduce the number of new builds
But NY can use most of this stuff afterward which is immportant - otherwise allthe money is a waste
some smaller businesses will probably be hurtif people are not going to work and eating out for lunch but tons of people will be there for the olympics and not in one central place as for the convention
it will help NY - plus they can also get money to upgraqde trains and subways systems - LIRR could actually get some more trains even though we have better trains then Metro North

Re: How would you feel if they decided to have the Olympics in NYC?
I also think that this will help the city mostly... by turning two... potentially three areas of NYC that are currently (well... crappy)... and turn them into thriving areas of the city.
1st area would be the west side train yards by the Javitz center. This is the biggest area of Manhattan. Has anyone seen Nothing over there but some warehouses. My dad knows a few guys that own bars down there. And even though they are in the red every year... they are holding out to see if the stadium gets built there which would lead to HUGE profits.
2nd area is Long Island City. Not saying LIC is that bad. Its up and coming. But putting the Olympics there would really boom the neighborhood. Makes me wish i would have bought into one of those two huge apartment buildings.
3rd area is Shea Stadium. The Olympic plan would take over the auto junkyard grounds. Granted a lot of those businesses would be forced to move. But the area over there is nasty. Its like the armpit of Queens. The Olympic facilities would in the end net more jobs than the ones lost by moving the junkyard people. Again... a no-brainer.
And has anyone seen the schematic for the new stadium right on the water of the west side of Manhattan? It looks so kickass.
