how would you know if you had depression and what would you do??
I have been dealing with this issue for a long time. I am just getting worse, the past 2 years I have seen a major difference and it is not due to planning the wedding ( just got engaged sept 04) I do not sleep at night. I fall asleep but I wake up about an hour later and repeat the same thing over and over. sleep for 30 minutes then wake up and toss and turn all night! I have bags under my eyes, i look horrible and i am tired and lazy through out the entire day. I'm unhappy at times and just dont know why. I get upset easily, im not the same with FH, he has seen the change to. It is affecting the happy person i used to be. I'm 22 and feel like crap. I have went to a doctor and complained about my fatigue and they didnt help me. Please five advise, i cant keep this up, im afraid of what might happen to my health

i would ask your doctor to recommend a social worker you can go see-it may be someting you need meds for....if not at least you'll have someone to takl to who is unbiased-but I would def seek some professional help-you don't have to be unhappy-there are ways to brighten your life.

You definitely sound depressed. I am a social worker and deal with this all the time. I think you should seek professional help as soon as possible. Check with your insurance company for help. I am sorry you are going through this but with professional help, you can start to feel better. Good luck!!

Go see a good doctor. They should be ruling out physiological reasons as to why this might be happening. That would involve bloodwork and so forth. From there, if it isn't something organtic, the doctor will refer you to a phychiarist, who would be able to prescribe meds if there is an imbalance.

I agree. And just b/c one dr. couldn't help you, doesn't mean none will.

It sounds like it could be depression. Not a fun thing is it? Do you have any anxiety as well? You should find a counselor soon. You don't need to spend your engagement like this. They will be able to work with a Doctor should you need to go on meds. Meds can be a good thing We talk about his all the time at work and it amazes me how many people take medication for depression, anxiety and panic. Just know you are not alone!

This is normal so to speak for alot of people to feel the way you do but not normal in the way to let it go. I would say you need someone to open up to like a couselor or social worker. I've gone through the same thing but I know mine is due to alot of personal stress. I hope you feel better soon.

My mom was recently diagnosed with mild depression and is happier than ever after being given some meds. I think it's a brave thing to ralize that there's a problem and the first thing would be to see a doctor...best wishes hun!

Re: how would you know if you had depression and what would you do??
please see a therapist - i had VERY similar symptoms from the time I was 15 and just assumed I was a 'bad sleeper' and just sad because 'thats who I was'. turns I have major anxiety and have been depressed for the past 6 years, and it was not until my fiance started telling me 'this is not normal' did i seek help.
I have been seeing therapist for the past 9 months, and i feel amazing! I didn't want to do medication, but I have been talking through my life, and have identified the root of my problems.
Therapy is an AMAZING tool - please use it!

Re: how would you know if you had depression and what would you do??
I was in your shoes a year ago....I didn't know why I was so tired, unhappy, easily irritated.....and I delved into my issues when I decided to start talking to a professional....just to vent.
Then she helped me to see what in my past made me feel this way....I found out so many things I had no idea affected me!
My advice would be to seek some help...just to talk to someone objective over what you know is bothering you at first and the more you go, the better you feel and weill find out the cause of what is bothering you

Nenna,
You're describing symptoms consistent with depression. Mood swings, insomnia, disrupted sleep, feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest/pleasure in activities previously enjoyed... Obviously, I'm not offering a diagnosis over the net; however, it's certainly something you should attend to.
You can proceed in several ways:
1) If you know of a therapist through someone, contact that person and schedule an appointment.
2) If you don't know of anyone specific, you can contact you insurance provider and ask for a list of mental health professionals in your area.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a full physical. There are illnesses which can affect you in ways similar to depression.
Depressive episodes are not uncommon. The numbers of Americans who have at least one depressive episode are quite high.
Whatever the cause, something is going on with you. Seek out a therapist. Schedule an appointment with your GP for a physical so that you can rule out a physiological cause for your symptoms.
I wish you well.

hi neena,
http://www.abc.net.au/health/depression/quiz.htm
Here is a link to try out: 20 question quiz. Go to google.com and put in 'depressed,' SOOOO much information that might be helpful to you. I hope you get some good rest soon. I hope you also find someone to just talk to and they let you be yourself. You need to be comfortable talking to them about yourself. Otherwise, find therapy with someone else. Honestly, with all of life's questions and burden's, at some point, EVERYONE needs a hand to get back up.

Hi Nenna, I think you could definitely have depression. Especially because of the time period it has lasted it doesn't seem like a passing thing. I agree with everyone else on the boards to talk to a doctor. You should speak to a psychologist or psychiatrist, not a general practitioner. I had friends who went through depression and saw someone and got better! Don't feel like you are alone and I'm sure your FH will be there for you through it.

Let me just expand upon something Suemac said. Regarding not seeing a GP:
You should, in fact, see a GP. Any good therapist will ask that you have a full physical.
I am a firm believer that a GP should not be the one to prescribe anti depressants. I wholeheartedly believe that the only doctor who should prescribe and monitor anti depressants is a Psychiatrist.
Just as you wouldn't see a Nephrologist for something you should consult a Neurologist for, a GP is not the person to go to for psychotropic meds.

Re: how would you know if you had depression and what would you do??
I totally agree with everything that NYTherapist said. She is absolutely correct. I am assuming by her screenname that she is some sort of a therapist & giving you practical advise. I am also in the mental health field and as a practicing psychologist, I believe those are the steps to follow. Set up an appointment for a complete physical/bloodwork and also set up an appointment for a counseling session.
If you need help finding a psychologist or LMSW, FM & I will gladly provide you with referrals based on your insurance information.
