Are you paying? or are your parents paying? i would just say my parents have set a price that is within there budget and that is what I am working with. It is no one business what you are paying..i could see maybe if they were chipping in.

I have also been back and forth over the best way to handle this without giving an actual amount...I find myself just saying something like 'we are getting a good deal and there will be a lot included but I haven't really worked out how much everything would cost pp when you include like flowers, favors, tax, gratuity and everything else'...usually I've rambled on with that for a while so I can change the subject!! We're paying for this on our own and I'm tired of getting caught off guard with this rude question. It's the second time the same person has asked my FH and I want a good comeback line.

Ticked off Bride: As much as our budget allows us considering we are paying for our own wedding!!!

I just say 'we're paying enough' and if they push I say 'It depends on our finances - we might add so I won't know until the week before.' If they push more, 'well, everything is negotiable so I am not sure yet - I'm good with getting deals so we'll see'
tell them 'you don't want to know' and giggle a bit like your being playful, if that doesn't work answer ' I dont want to tell'
maybe they want to cover their plates, but they aren't being very tactful

How about (in a very polite voice) 'Oh... why do you ask?' They won't have a good answer because they are just being nosey!!! But if they answer with something somewhat valid: 'my friend's daughter is paying such and such and I was just curious' then you can address their answer without actually answering their question.
But it sounds like this rudeness will continue so you should probably just come right out and say that you aren't telling and you think it's rude to ask!! SOOOO RUDE!!

I don't even think you need a 'cute' or 'smart' comment. Just politely say that you don't feel comfortable telling them, and you actually feel it's inapproriate to ask. That should surely put this person, or anyone else, in their place.
