hi ladies...this question is for the already married brides......
without sounding tacky....
how much money in gifts did you get back from the wedding from the money you spent on it?....
my FH was asking his friends and they said they got back more than what they spent......and asked me to post this question on LIW...i wasnt sure how to search for this question....we've been saving $$ over our 2 yr long engagement...and by the time we have our wedding, we woulda spent a lil more than 1/2 of it on our wedding....i'd hope to make it most back so we can use it for a dwnpymt...
TIA!!!

Re: how'd you do with $$ wedding gifts?.....
I think everyone hopes that they will get back some of what they payed. I'm not looking at my wedding as a way to make money, but I do hope to re-coup some of the cost. If I don't that's okay, we are spending what we can afford to spend, but it would be nice to at least break even.

We paid for the wedding 100% ourselves. We went into this not expecting anything. We were just happy to have people celebrate with us. In the end, we 'made' money, since some of our guests were extremely generous. We were shocked that we came out ahead of what we spent.

We are paying for the bulk of the wedding ourselves and we have been putting money away for over a year just for the wedding. Hopefully it will be paid on full by the day of so anything we get will be put towards our savings account. I highly doubt we will break even and I know we have very generous families. I don't think this is a crazy question at all. I think for me, it's a comfort to know that I will have some money to start our new lives together because every cent over the last year has gone to the wedding

We basicly broke even. If my parents did help us like they did we would have lost. A never thought we would make $, so i'm happy with the outcome. I look at it has I had a great party for free.

Re: how'd you do with $$ wedding gifts?.....
money spent on wedding as compared to gifts received:
Lost approx $15,000.
However, there were quite a few items that we weren't going to have at our wedding and then our families decided to purchase those items. But, don't get me wrong, these are items that they paid for because they wanted them, not us.
So, if you were to factor out those items, we'd be at maybe a $7,000 loss.
It's IMPOSSIBLE to 'gauge' what you're going to get as gifts. We had a well-to-do couple bring their uninvited adult soon to our wedding and give us a check for $65.
We had another couple who struggles financially give us $500 as a gift, in addition to making our wedding card box for us. I thought that the card box was our gift- I wasn't expecting anything else from them.
ets: As someone who paid for her wedding out of a savings account, it's very easy to look at my bank statement and see that I had $z before and now I have $x much less than $z.
Factoring out the emotion, and looking at dollars only, it's very likely that after a wedding, you'll have less money than you had before. And, in all honesty, if I could do it all over, I would have spent A LOT less money. Now that I'm trying to buy a house and don't have as much money as I had before, I wish I would have done things differently. There were so many 'extras' that we had because I wanted to do 'extra' for my guests. I wish I saved my money because now it's gone and those 'extras' weren't necessary.

based on what we spent ourselves- we made money
based on the cost of the wedding- paid for by my Dad- he lost money- but he considers it the best money he ever spent
you can't look at it in terms of making and losing- you wouldn't look at a B-day party that way

i dont think this is tacky at all...everyone wnats to know how much is that envelope! lol
we will be payin for the whole entire wedding ourselves-do i expect to make all of it back? not all of it, but most of it.. im basing this on our e party-my mom threw it for us, it was about 3k-and we made almost 9k!!!!
so ppl were very generous...

I would never have even posted this question, because it's actually kinda personal, and a bit selfish sounding if you ask me, but .. hey lots of girls answered so there ya go. I'm not married yet, but I can care less what we recieve. I think thats the way it should be. JMHO!!!

I don't think it's selfish at all. It's just an honest question what are boards for if not honest, curious questions?

I don't think it's an unreasonable question -- you have to think about where you'll be financially afterwards. I think at least if you get a good chunk of it back you're in good shape -- and you had your wedding day which is priceless.
I totally agree with kmkelly!

Absolutely - this site is for brides and grooms to come and ask whatever they want to ask, and whoever wants to respond can, and if someone doesn't like the questions or does not have an answer they can move on to the next board!
I don't think that TIA is only concerned about how much $$$ she is going to make off of the day, I think she was just wondering how other brides and grooms did and asking past brides to give her a little idea of what her and her FH could expect after the wedding. IMO, TIA is just trying to plan her future with her FH.

Perhaps you'll recoup the cost of the hall, but it's pretty tough to recoup all of your expenses. If you're really worried about having enough $ for a down payment after the wedding, do everything you can to cut corners. Make your own invitations, get a DJ instead of a band, don't have favors, use candles instead of flowers, etc. There are plenty of ways to have a beautiful wedding without spending $$$.

Re: how'd you do with $$ wedding gifts?.....
My sister came out short in regards to envelopes, my family isnt generous at all, more on the cheap side. Total of envelopes were less than the hall cost. But if you factor her bridal shower and that her and FH went away for Bachelor parties expenses paid than she got back about 35% of her total cost of the wedding. Around 30% in monetary value.
Do I expect to break even, Nope!! Any gifts I get, which is appreciated not expected will go into the savings and then me and FH will have to work hard again at saving like we are doing for the wedding.
I think majority of people are curious about their envelopes when the night is over. I will!!

I expect to break even on reception costs (food) but not on flowers, DJ, dress, etc.
