Re: hurricane

Accuweather.com is saying that the hurricane would probably be a category 2 or 3 when it hits land, but that's still not good. Check out this link to the hurricane of 1938 that hit LI.1938 LI Hurricane

A category 2 is 96-100 mph with a storm surge of 6-8 feet. Category 3 is 111-130 mph with a storm surge of 9-12 feet.

The link above has some animations that show flooding up to Montauk Hwy with the barrier islands all flooded. Check out the animation for Montauk!

They still don't know just where it will hit, but we're definately in the possible path.

Should make for an interesting wedding on Saturday.

My FH is freaking because he had to deal with Hurricane Bertha for his first wedding.

Re: hurricane

this is a terrible storm.. it will weaken as it comes into the cooler northwaters here.... it depends on how fast it moves up the coast.... if it moves slow there will be more weakening of course.

you know I see it like this. if it hits thursday or friday then well probibly have those days off from work which will be nice. but if it hits I may not have a home left to stay at while Im enjoying the day off.
sooo...

Re: hurricane

Yes.. hurricanes should lose punch when they hit cooler water. Either way this is bound to bring nasty weather our way. Look at what Floyd did in 99 and that was much father away.

NYC is due for a hurricane. I hate to say that.. but it's only nature. Back when I did property claims.. we used to talk about how NYC was completely unprepared for a real hurricane.

We can only hope for the best and expect the worse. Be prepared. Breads and canned foods that type of thing. Personally Im not putting much concern on it until Wednesday when they have a better Idea of where this baby is landing. Yellow is possible landing, orange is probable..

For now Im just checking the tires, the brake fluids, brake inspection and windshield wipers. Making sure both cars are up to speed on maintance.. no surprises.. Can you imagine your battery dying in a serious rain storm?? ick. We are planning to give ourselves extra time to and from work. Quick meals for dinner and just sorta wait this one out.

Being from San Antonio, we never got hit BY a hurricane.. but ALWAYS had to deal with it's blacklash. Im sorta used to it. haha

ETA: Just read the post on the tree falling issue. That is a serious concern. We've had some tough weather in the last year, trees have fallen and serious windstorms (remember 9/11/02?) This could have weaken the holdings some trees have. Try to think of alternate (several) ways to work... with floods or down trees in mind. And remember.. If you're alive and it's only water and wind.. try to stay calm and not rush into stuff. It ain't worth trying to cross a flooded area to get home. If something takes hours longer than usual... fine. It's the biggest mistake we saw in Texas.. people 'pushing it' to get somewhere. Idiots.

Re: hurricane

Bride2Be03...you're worrying about a wedding that is 19 days away? Mine is Saturday.

FH is preparing:
-He ordered a generator which should be here for Tuesday.
-He picked up a dozen plastic fuel cans so we can fill them with gas or water.
-Truck is filled.
-Tomorrow we'll be hitting Costco or BJs to stock up on grub/water.
-We'll be picking up plywood from Home Depot for our big windows and such.
-remove all outdoor furniture, etc. (don't want any projectiles!)
Hmmm, what else is there?

Re: hurricane

jenny we did all the preparing today too.

We have about 35 gallons of gas for the generators
15 gallons of bottled water
both cars filled

if we are going to get the storm Im heading to BJ's on Tues to stock up...

OR if its going to be REALLY bad then we are going upstate to go fishing and relaxing. No need for weather related stress

Re: hurricane

I think it hit with 90mph winds

which hopefully will be the case with this storm
whichever way we get it lets face it folks were getting a big storm
it looks pretty deffinite to me

Im gonna do some fishing tonight

Re: hurricane

kptoys- I found this on gloria:

Hurricane Gloria ranks as the 13th costliest and the 16th most intense hurricane at time of U.S. landfall this century. Gloria first passed over Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on September 27 as a category 3 storm. Moving at more than 30 mph, it made landfall again over southern Long Island, New York as a category 2 storm. Economic losses were estimated at $900 million.

WOW! We're in for a doosey! Girls, get ready! I went out otday and got batteries and water. Filled up my car but I think it's a good idea to fill up gas cans also to have a reserve. I'm sending my DH on a board game hunt so if we are in the dark for a while, we'll be able to entertain ourselves (besides the usual ) without LIW!

Re: hurricane

**** I have agreat memory to get it that close. I didnt lookat any website for my gloria information.

Re: hurricane

I've been watching this hurricane very closely as I am a Weather Channel junkie. It seems that either we're going to get hit or my parents in North Carolina will get hit. I think it's time to buy some flashlights and batteries.
